The portraits and tail-pieces (depicting the monuments) are by Thomas Kitchin, formerly apprenticed to Bowen and later Hydrographer to the King. VERY SCARCE.

br. "A proposito del silenzio, sono un gran maestro in questo genere letterario". Isaak Babel' amava circondarsi di leggenda, ricordando di sé episodi e aneddoti di non mai accertata verità. Dopo i capolavori dell' Armata a cavallo e dei Racconti di Odessa, che ne hanno fatto tra i massimi prosatori russi e forse il più grande tra gli scrittori russi ebrei, visse nell'epoca di Stalin non senza alcuni privilegi, prima di tutto quello di poter viaggiare in Europa. Era amico e protetto di Gorki e quando questi morì nel 1936, pare scrivesse "ora verranno a cercarmi". Fu arrestato processato e fucilato nel 1940 dietro accuse ancora incerte e la sua morte fu conosciuta dalla seconda moglie (la prima viveva in Francia) solo nel 1953, un anno prima della riabilitazione completa "data l'inesistenza dei reati". Non scrisse molto e la sua scarsa alacrità, criticata entro l'associazionismo degli scrittori sovietici, era forse dovuta più all'impossibilità di restare "impuro e innocente" come nei suoi capolavori, che al dissenso attivo verso il Realismo socialista. Era tutto sommato "avvolto in un mantello di enigmatiche ambiguità", come disse la figlia Natalia. E sono queste enigmatiche ambiguità le profondità che questo libro intende scandagliare, afferrando la storia di Babel' da quei momenti e da quegli sprazzi simultaneamente veri nella sostanza e inaffidabili. Quindi non una biografia sistematica ma una rapsodia di voci e scene.
