181211315New-Brunswick: Printed by Lewis Deare For Weller & Meeker Newark 1812. A New Edition Corrected. Hardcover. Fair. Full calf bottom board detached spine with two cracks cloth visible beneath the backstrip from an old repair boards quite worn 7 x 4 1/2 inches. "Matthias Baker's Book" in black ink on the ffep ink name stamp of the same above it. 1-299 1; 1-264; counted and complete. A couple of loosening signatures text is generally in good condition. The book begins with an extract of the Life of Isaac Watts from Johnson's Lives of the Poets. The hymnal has its own title page and page numbers the imprint is New-Brunswick: Printed by Lewis Deare 1812; as with the Psalms the title page has "A New Edition Corrected." Watts is printed as the author on the title page of the hymns but not on the Psalms although they are an adaptation of Watts nonetheless. This is Joel Barlow's revision of Watts approved by the Presbyterian Synod of New York and Philadelphia in 1787 and later printed without the Presbyterian name to broaden the customer base. It is also the "Corrected" Edition see Benson The American revisions of Watts's Psalms p. 15."A final series of editions of Barlow's revision needs mention. These began as early as 1812 and consist in each case of the Psalms and Hymns bound together in one volume each with its own title and each described as "corected." The constitutes the only variance in the title of the Psalms and there appears to be little variance in the text. The corrections are rather in the line of restorations of verses or even whole versions of Psalms as given by Watts but which Barlow had chosen to omit. In some editions a brief 'Life of Watts' is included." - Benson. With a signed provenance card from the music collection of A. Merril Smoak Jr. DWS. "Isaac Bronson was a highly successful financier of the Jacksonian era who was also one of the period's most original and influential banking theorists. Bronson accumulated his very considerable fortune in New York primarily by judicious personal money-lending operations on long-term bonds and mortgages at a cautious 7 per cent annual return supplemented by successful ventures in land speculation. In addition to wealth he had by the 1830's acquired a weighty reputation for sober financial conservatism and was regarded as an authoritative exponent of sound banking principles. Prominent in the financial community he had long thrown his weight as a sound banking theorist against the "wild-cat" practices of the then rampant state banks." --Venit A. 1945. On the author Source: Public Domain:
Isaac ben Judah or Yitzchak ben Yehuda Abravanel 1437 - 1508 was a Jewish statesman philosopher Bible commentator and financier. In many works he is referred to solely by his last name which is variously spelled as Abravanel Abarbanel and Abrabanel. Many Torah and Talmud scholars today simply refer to him as "The Abarbanel". He was born in Lisbon Portugal. He died in Venice and was buried in Padua next to Rabbi Judah Minz Rabbi of Padua. Isaac Abravanel developed many works during his lifetime which are often categorized into three groups: exegesis philosophy and apologetics. Exegesis refers to biblical commentary his philosophy dealt with the sciences and how the general field relates to the Jewish religion and traditions and apologetics defends the Jewish idea of the coming of the Messiah. Abravanel’s exegetic writings were different from the usual biblical commentaries because he took social and political issues of the times into consideration. He believed that mere commentary was not enough but that the actual lives of the Jewish people must be deliberated on as well when discussing such an important topic as the Bible. He also took the time to include an introduction concerning the character of each book he commented on as well as its date of composition and the intention of the original author in order to make the works more accessible to the average reader. Christian scholars appreciated the convenience of Abravanel's commentaries and often used them when preparing their own exegetical writing. This may have had something to do with Abravanel’s openness towards the Christian religion since he worked closely with Messianic ideas found within Judaism. Because of this Abravanel’s works were translated and distributed within the world of Christian scholarship.
Ozar Hasefer p164 item #65. NP hardcover

Their wide circulation in the monasteries had a major impact on the neptic tradition of the Orthodox Church. The collection of these Homilies survives in numerous manuscripts with several differences. The first printed publication in Greek was done in 1770 by Nikephorus Theotokes who used two handwritten codes. A re-edition emerged in 1895 by Joachim Spetsieres and one more in 1871by Callinicus Pantocratorinos. The Holy Monastery of Iveron at Mount Athos commissioned scholar Marcel Pirard to prepare a critical edition based on the entire greek handwritten tradition. So we have now the first critical greek edition of the "Homilies". The extensive introduction includes: a A biography of Saint Isaac b Sources of the work and theology of the sources c comments on the original Syrian text the ancient translations and the translation into Greek d a history of the Greek text with description of the manuscripts. Finally the volume includes an annex with five texts of an anonymous author considered as texts written by Saint Isaac.

CONTENTS:
