Isaac Watts 1674-1748 was born in Southampton and was a noted minister and writer. He started his career as a minister in 1698 at the age of 24 but his considerable output of published works is probably his most significant contribution. He is probably best know for his extensive publication of hymns and for his Horae Lyrica first published in 1706. The Psalms of David was first published 1719 and has appeared in several editions. Denoted the "Third American Edition" of the work first published in the UK in 1725. More properly it just might be termed the third Exeter edition following those of 1793 and 1801. On the verso of the title appears a typographic frame made up of ornaments and the legend "The Property Of." In this copy the original owner has inserted a small label with his name in ink manuscript. His larger printed bookplate appears on the pastedown. First published in England in 1725 this is the first printing in America of Watts' first important work; it ultimately became extremely influential in universities and America well through the first half of the 19th century. As an interesting sidenote Watts in describing the particular sophism known as the 'straw man" was the first the use the word 'straw" in describing it. At p. 303 he writes: ".and when they have with a great deal of pomp attacked and confoundedthese images of straw of their own making they triumph over their adversary as if they had confounded his position."<br/><br/>A very scarce and important book.
