Signed or inscribed by all the contestants to Mrs Piatigorsky.

The Piatigorsky Cup was a triennial series of double round-robin grandsmaster chess tournaments held in the United States in the 1960's. Sponsored by the Piatigorsky foundation only two events were held in 1963 and 1966. the Piatigorsky Cups were the strongest U S Chess tournaments since New York 1927. Jacqueline Piatigorsky was married to cellist Gregor Piatigorsky. One of the strongest woman chess players in the U S and a regular competitor in the U S Women's Chess Championship she designed the cup and was the primary organizer of the tournaments. The prize funds were among the largest of any chess tournament up to that time. Every player was guaranteed a prize and all traveling and living expenses were paid. The First Piatigorsky Cup was held in the Ambassador Hotel Los Angeles in July 1963. The tournament field of eight included players from five countries. the soviet representatives Paul Keres and World Champion Tigran Petrosian finished equal first to share the cup with a score of 8 1/2/14 receiving more than half of the $10000 prize fund $3000 for first. Keres won most of the games in the tournament six but lost twice to Samuel Reshevsky. The Cup was Petrosian's first tournament since winning the 1963 World Championship match with Mikhail Botvinnik and was one of two first prizes he shared in his six-year reign as champion. He was the first reigning champion to play in an American tournament since Alexander Alekhine at Pasadena 1932. After losing the second round to Svetozar Gligoric Petrosian was never in danger the rest of the tournament. The remainder of the tournament field included to Americans Reshevsky and Pal Benko two Argentinians Oscar Panno and Miguel Najdorf and two Europeans Gligoric Yugoslavia and Frank Olafsson Iceland. U S Champion Bobby Fischer decline an invitation after his demand for $2000 appearance fee was refused by the tournament organizers. Gligoric led halfway through the tournament with 4 1/2/7 but scored only three draws in the last seven games and finished fifth behind Najdorf and Olafsson. Petrosian finished the strongest with 5/7 in the second half. Before the last round Petrosian led with 8 points followed by Keres with 7½ and Najdorf and Ólafsson with 7. Both Petrosian and Keres had Black in the final round. Petrosian drew his game against Reshevsky but Keres beat Gligorić to result in a tie for first place with 8½ points each.

Condition: Edges sunned inscriptions to front end paper and title else spiral spine cracked else very good. Creased where folded right edge of sheet a little rough a few very short edge tears. Overall very good. Isaac Smith Kalloch 1831-87 was a flamboyant Baptist pastor of Boston and was tried but not convicted of adultery. He then moved to Kansas were he indulged in land speculation shady railroad ventures and political maneuvers before moving to San Francisco 1875 because "there are more wicked people of both sexes in that city and I feel called by God to convert them." Kallock became pastor of Metropolitan Temple the city's largest church and the candidate of the Workingmen's party for Mayor. His campaign attacked not only Chinese labor and the Big Four but also Charles de Young whose Chronicle opposed him. In cold blood de Young shot Kalloch at his church. Kalloch survived to become Mayor of San Francisco 1879-81. His son Isaac Milton Kalloch in turn shot and killed de Young 1880. The father weathered impeachment attempts and the son was acquitted of murder. Both father and son then moved to Washington Territory to become lawyers there. Earlier while in Kansas Kalloch borrowed $104.00 from one J. B. Wheeler at the Simpsons Bank of Lawrence Kansas to be paid back at 10% interest. The original promissory note signed by Kalloch is attached to the Protest for Payment. The loan was finally turned over to the Anglo California Bank of San Francisco who hired one James L. King a Notary Public to collect the money from Kalloch. Thus this official Protest for Non Payment signed by King was presented to Kalloch. In keeping with his personal history Kalloch refused to pay. Hart A Companion to California: p.254. unknown books

He single-handedly provided American Jews with many of the basic religious texts institutions and conceptual tools they needed to construct the cultural foundation of what would later emerge as the largest Jewish community in the history of the Jewish people. Printed in 1845 this edition of the Pentateuch in five volumes included a vocalized Hebrew text of each of the Five Books of Moses together with an English translation and notes as well as the haftarot prophetic readings. Leeser actually began working on The Law of God in 1838. Among the factors involved in his decision to begin systematically working on a translation was the recent opening of Rebecca Gratz's Sunday School which met for the first time in March 1838 in Philadelphia and was desperately in need of appropriate study material. Students were compelled to use the King James Bible for want of a Jewish alternative. Religiously objectionable passages in other texts provided by Protestant organizations were either pasted over or torn out by Gratz's staff. Leeser who supported the Sunday School and was its chief academic resource person felt compelled to find more suitable texts for the students. The impetus for Leeser throughout was always his desire to provide the Jews of America with an English text of the Bible that was produced by one of their own and was not tainted by conversionist motivations. This copy with provenance to Solomon Nunes Carvalho who was a noted American painter photographer writer and inventor best known for traveling with John C. Fremont on his fifth expedition through Kansas Colorado and Utah. He published an account of that journey titled "Incidents of Travel and Adventure in the Far West; with Colonel Fremont's Last Expedition" 1860 and was considered a pioneer in travel photography. Isaac Leeser the hazzan of Congregation K.K. Mikveh Israel married Carvalho and his wife Sarah Miriam Solis on October 15 1845 in Philadelphia where Carvalho's father had a workshop.

Rosenbach 569; Singerman 884; Goldman 7; Lance J.
