Hobbs' work is a most uncommon architectural pattern book illustrated with ov 100 engravings with plans and elevations for eighty-four separate houses in widely diverse styles many of which were originally printed in Godey's Ladie Book and The Farmer. The remaining plans have never before appeared in print Each listing includes a drawing of the exterior of the house a plan and a description in which the author recommends building materials suggests a cos for construction describes the style of the house and discusses the characteristics of a suitable tenant. Many of the houses are identified by owner and location. A diverse collection of Victorian cottages villas churches and more. The houses are mainly in the Philadelphia Pittsburgh a Youngstown Ohio areas. Very good in dark green cloth boards with gilt titl to spine and gilt illustration of a house to front board. Herodotus is generally considered 'the father of history'. Departing from the Homeric chronicle 'he was the first to collect his materials systematically to test their accuracy as far as he could and arrange his story in such a way as to appeal to as well as inform his readers' PMM. The author foresees the United States gaining a new level of economic and nutritional independence by producing its own sugar and other products from the fast-growing plant. The illustrations are closely keyed to the numerous advertisements for processing machinery at the rear of the text. The marvelous lithographic plate measures six by eighteen inches and depicts happy farmers processing sorghum into sugar syrup molasses etc. while in the distance their shipa river steamer literally comes in. Heard was with general Sibley in his campaign against the Sioux. It appears he was stationed in Minnesota for 12 years and witnessed the removal of the Sioux from their ancient homelands to reservations along the Minnesota River. He spent considerable time collecting information from the Indians about what he referred to as massacres and outrages against the whites. This work reflects the output of those efforts. The Proceedings contains the first printing of the AMA's famous "Code of Medical Ethics" the first national codification of ethics for any profession. The Code's two co-authors John Bell and Isaac Hays drew from the precepts set forth by Thomas Percival in his Medical Ethics 1803 but used them to create "a radically innovative document that transformed and transcended Percival's ideas providing the foundation for what is best described as ‘the American medical ethics revolution'" Baker 1999 p. 19. The Code which was largely the work of Hays appears on pages 91-106 of the Proceedings.
