Original publisher's decorated binding some minor scrapes to the boards; paper lightly toned by age and one plate with outer margin and corner with small tears; otherwise a very good copy. First edition. Beautifully rendered colored lithograph plates of the botanical work of Isaac Sprague the "most accurate of living botanical artist . . ." working in the late 19th century. The plates based on water color drawings were printed by Nims and Knight the noted Troy New York publisher who specialized among other subjects in illustrated books and botanical art. Sprague was the younger brother of Hosea Sprague the meteorologist and local historian of Hingham Massachusetts who at an early age was apprenticed to a carriage painter where his skills were quickly recognized. His ability to translate observed object into drawings caught the attention of James Audubon and in 1840 he accompanied him on his trip up the Missouri River to sketch quadrupeds. Upon is return he was introduced to Asa Gray and began a long collaboration of rendering botanical specimens into drawings for Gray's works. Gray was quoted as saying that Sprague "raised the level of botanical illustration in this country to that of the great European centers." John Galluzzo. Good/No Jacket. 1828 miniature leather bound book 3.75" x 2.75": reprints two of Isaac Watts' hymnals in one volume: Psalms of David 282 pages with index 150 hymns bound with Hymns and Spiritual Songs in Three Books 246 pages with index includes 150 170 and 45 hymns. Both published by Elijah Booth 1828; Elizabeth-town NJ. 3.75" x 2.75". Contemporary brown leather with plain boards front and rear and ornate gilt floral and ruled designs and with author's last name to the spine. Some faint penciled notations to front and rear endpapers. Binding is solid; leaves somewhat browned and with scattered foxing but paper is still supple. Rear endpages are a bit tattered on the edges and corners. Textblock is splayed a bit such that the block is thicker at the foredge than at the spine. Some edge wear with underlying boards shwoing through at the foredge corners. Isaac Watts extracted from his Brittanica biography 7/17/1674 to 11/25/1748 was an English Nonconformist minister and regarded as the father of English hymnody. This volumes collects 515 of Watts' hymns in one small volume. Elijah Booth hardcover

A most attractive little publication 4" x 2. 5" approx 10cm x 6.5 cm in sewn blue wraps with a woodcut of children praying around a table below the title in a charming decorative border. Very clean. Internally the woodcut and title is repeated on the first page - a good deep impression - NO date shown but likely 1815/30 . The rest of the book is unillustrated but contains what is probably a version of Watt's 'The First Set of Catechisms and Prayers; or the Religion of Little Children under Seven Years of Age'. 30pp. Excellent condition clean tight and bright. NO inscriptions or marks. "Isaac Watts is most well-known as a Nonconformist hymn-writer. Many of his compositions are still in common use today & his Divine Songs first published in 1715 is considered the first hymn-book for children. Wattss non-hymnal writings include catechisms composed for children of various ages. The first set for children under seven years of age & the second set for children from seven to twelve years of age. This early nineteenth century edition begins with 'The First Catechism of the Principles of Religion' - ending with 'The Young Child's Grace after Meat'. Scarce. See Images. ; 4" x 2.5" . 18165960Frankfort Kentucky: 8 June 1816. The survey refers to acreage bound by "a post" "a black oak" "a Spanish oak" "two hickory bushes" and the creek. The lot is near modern Little River in Christian County in the Southwestern part of the state. Isaac Shelby was Kentucky's founding governor inaugurated the same day that the Commonwealth joined the United States. His term ended in 1796 but with the outbreak of the War of 1812 Shelby was brought out of retirement to serve a second term. By all accounts he was a brilliant governor. 1 leaf 327 x 400 mm. Seal of the Land Office of Kentucky. Lot warranted to Josiah Matthews described in manuscript with paraphs. Signed by the governor and by M.L. Hardin secretary. Partially divided along horizontal fold; chip on left edge; toned. 8 June unknown books

Best known as the author of <em>The Compleat Angler</em> he also wrote a number of short biographies including one of his friend John Donne. They have been collected under the title of <em>Walton's Lives</em>. Born at Stafford around 1593 Walton moved to London in his teens where he worked as a linen draper. In the capital he befriended the poet and clergyman John Donne. A Royalist during the English Civil War Walton returned to his home county of Staffordshire settling at Shallowford following the Royalist defeat at Marston Moor in 1644. Though Walton had returned to London by 1650 his experiences at Shallowford provided material for <em>The Compleat Angler</em>: a celebration of the art and spirit of fishing first published in 1653. Throughout his life Walton published biographies of subjects including Donne and Henry Wotton. These were later collected as Walton's <em>Lives</em>. Walton's literary admirers have included Charles Lamb and he gives his name to places and organisations in his native country the United States and Kenya. Walton left his residence at Shallowford to the local poor. It is now maintained as a museum to his legacy.</p> Payne & Foss. hardcover

A superior copy of a scarce work. Converted to spiritualism in 1848 by teenaged Kate and Margaret Fox the author and his wife were early believers and did a good deal to further the movement. Spirits contacted here include Swedenborg Calhoun Washington Penn Voltaire and Jefferson with an introduction by Franklin. Post was a noted abolitionist and his wife was a supporter of women's rights; their circle of friends included William Lloyd Garrison Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass. The primary thrust of this promotional book is the application of the heating system to schools but even those not particularly fascinated by the topic will find the illustrations pleasing and as a sales-oriented book this one stands out as especially elaborate for its day. The work also addresses other piquant topics such as "The Dry Closet System of Disposing of Excrement" "The Physiology of Respiration" etc. Much of the text is presented as a dialogue making this work a precursor of sorts for the modern day infomercial.
