1778WRCAM41363Virginia 1778. One folded sheet. Approximately 550 words. Tanned at folds. Some ink burn through page. An embossment on one side reads "Washington County." A small closed tear affects approximately six characters. A manuscript land deed written by Isaac Cox for the sale of land to John Decker. In the deed Cox refers to "Yohogania County" a Virginia county created in 1776. The county included much of south-western Pennsylvania and overlapped with Pennsylvania's own western claims. The land in question is "on the river Ohio and bounded on the East by lands of Thomas Pollack and on the North by lands of William McMahan said land goes by the name of the Mingo Bottom containing four hundred acres." Mingo was a term for the Native Americans mostly Iroquois who had been displaced and settled in the northern Ohio river basin. Modern-day Mingo Junction lies in the far rnorthern pan-handle of West Virginia north of Steubenville Ohio and would have had close associations with Washington County Pennsylvania than Virginia. This association would explain why in 1806 a Washington County clerk approved the deed. unknown books
1889002426Toledo OH: Isaac D. Smead & Co. Printed by Henry O. Shepard & Co. Chicago 1889. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good. Inscribed by Snead under his frontis portrait possibly holographic and FFEP. 4to. 154 pp. With fourteen pages of chromolithographs some full page plates and many other illustrations of schools heating systems and the like. The primary thrust of this promotional book is the application of the heating system to schools but even those not particularly fascinated by the topic will find the illustrations pleasing and as a sales-oriented book this one stands out as especially elaborate for its day. The work also addresses other piquant topics such as "The Dry Closet System of Disposing of Excrement" "The Physiology of Respiration" etc. Much of the text is presented as a dialogue making this work a precursor of sorts for the modern day infomercial. Referred to in RomaineGuide to American Trade Catalogs p. 263. A few shallow blisters of cloth and some other light inconspicuous soiling of boards. Generally clean and tight.

Isaac D. The numerous chromolithographic plates printed in rich and varying color show Smead's designs in riveting detail. 1956279528West Newton MA 1956. unbound. very good. 1 page 11 x 8.5 inches West Newton Massachusetts September 19 1956 writing to an old college buddy and reminiscing about the past in part: ".Good to hear from you. It brings back a host of memories very sharply and clearly from the day I first stepped into the Chem lab on 10 April 1942 see I still date things Navy-style---never broke the habit till my last visit in 1947. We match you in children Gertrude and I but in the reverse order of sexes. And they're much younger since we got started later. David is 5 years old and has just entered kindergarten; while Robyn Joan is 1 1/2. We own a house now see address above in West Newton a Boston suburb. We bought it last February. You'll remember how I used to rant against owning houses. I'm still against it but with 2 kids we needed the room. As soon as they grow up and get married I intend to move to a penthouse in Manhattan and never look at a tree again.P.S As for best-sellers unlikely---but I've been averaging 3 books a year counting textbooks since 1950 and they all are fair-sellers---so I'll settle." 1969571201969. An interesting letter from Singer on a 5.5- by 7.75-inch sheet on personalized stationery dated Oct. 22 1969 to Mr. Don Gold. Singer writes that he remembers having lunch with Gold who apparently wants to become Singer's new literary agent. "As things are now my publisher Mr. Straus is my agent as far as translations and theatrical presentations are concerned. They have done quite well and it would be very difficult for me to get another agent suddenly." He writes that there is always the possibility he may change agents. "As a matter of fact my publisher has done a lot for me in the literary field but not too much in selling my works to the movies which may be my fault not his." He writes he may call Gold in the future and wishes him well in his new job. A very interesting insightful letter from Singer who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1978. Weld an Irishman came to America in 1795 when he was nineteen. This work narrates his travels through the former colonies along the eastern seaboard and the Canadian provinces. Very popular at the time it was published Weld comments on the population and social habits and customs of the people he saw. According to Howes Weld seemed to prefer Canada to the States. Compared to the similar works of this period Weld seems to be fairly objective on most things. However whether or not his observation that Americans lose their teeth prematurely is accurate would be hard to substantiate. Contains several interesting views of Niagara Falls Mt. Vernon Bethlehem PA and a large map of the northern portion of the United States with inset of the southern States. John Stockdale hardcover books
