The recipient Philip Dosse often addressed as in this letter as ‘Dossé’ was proprietor of Hansom Books publisher of a stable of seven arts magazines including Books and Bookmen and Plays and Players. See ‘Death of a Bookman’ by the novelist Sally Emerson editor of ‘Books and Bookmen’ at the time of Dosse’s suicide in Standpoint magazine October 2018. Both items 1p landscape 8vo. In good condition lightly aged. ONE 16 October 1975: She informs Dosse that 'Sir Isaiah Berlin is in Australia for the whole of this term' and will not return until December.' Regardless of the deadline she thinks it is 'fairly likely he would regretfully say that he couldn't' review 'Mrs. Meier's sic autobiography' as 'he has a fairly large backlog of writing to catch up with!' TWO 4 November 1975: She has heard from Berlin who asks her to tell Dosse that 'he fears he cannot review Mrs. Meir's autobiography for you even if you could await his return: he has so much work to do that he has had to decide to undertake no reviewing for at least two years.' 16 October and 4 November 1975. Remnants of leather spine final leaf partially loose to text block; title-page discolored some foxing and light staining throughout. Established October 24 1812 by Isaiah Thomas this is the second annual report which includes revised by-laws that governed the Society. The first twelve pages written by Thomas outline in five sections the mission and goals of AAS. He begins by discussion what should be collected. He views the product of the printing press to include books pamphlets newspapers broadsides and discuss how different an American library will be when compared to the great institutions of England and Europe. He suggests that membership should be from all the principal towns and cities in the United States. These representatives should collect local history with the goals of presenting collections from all over the country to the Society. Be more organized as an institution and have regular meetings so new collections and ideas can be reported to all the members. Finally to include into membership "gentlemen who reside in various parts of Europe the Eastindies and China." He concludes with reiteration of the goals of the society: "Our principal objects are to COLLECT and PRESERVE - that which commands our attention . . ." Albumen photograph 4-13/16 by 7-15/16 inches of the interior of a Chinese restaurant showing the entry hall opening out into the dining room which has tables and chairs but no people. <br /> <br /> This view is captioned in the image in a narrow strip along the bottom of the print. This image is listed in Taber's ca. 1889 catalog. The upper portion of the restaurant view is washed out as usual with this image not affecting any important details. The mount has been trimmed close to the image. The verso of the mount has glue residue perhaps due to removal from an album. Taber Photo unknown

An albumen silver print of Dupont Street in San Francisco with the Hang Fer Lo restaurant in the center. <br /> <br /> This was the leading Chinese restaurant in San Francisco before the earthquake. It operated on two floors above Columbo & Co. Cigars at 713 Dupont St. on the border of Little Italy and Chinatown. The Columbo sign is just legible in the image it can be matched to Taber photo 4764 which offers a close-up view of the restaurant. This image includes the street-level sign in Chinese characters which appears to offer vegetarian meals in addition to standard Chinese cuisine.<br /> <br /> 4-7/8 by 7-15/16 inches on a slightly larger modern thin paper mount. Captioned in the negative in a narrow strip along the bottom of the image. Two cracks in the image are colored in to minimize the breaks; the lower right corner of the image is a bit washed out.
