Brown cloth with gilt spine lettering. lxxxvii 423pp; viii 666pp 47pp. Tissue-guarded frontispiece illustration. Near fine. Exceptionally tight and bright second edition of this 1810 classic -- published as Volume V and VI in the "Archaeologia Americana" series in the "Transactions and Collection of the American Antiquarian Society" -- founded in 1812 by colonial printer publisher and author Thomas 1749-1831 the society's first president. 1890364050San Francisco: Taber Photo 1890. Near fine. A brown toned albumen silver print of one of one of Taber's most enigmatic views of San Francisco's always bustling Chinatown—an improbably empty alley with a ghostly image of a child at the intersection of two streets.

Taber obviously retouched the negative to remove figures from the upper part of the alley leaving faint ghosts behind and indistinct details. The child appears to have been added to insert an element of drama to the scene. The business sign on the left side of the street was enhanced in the negative by someone who did not know how to write Chinese characters.

4-7/8 by 8 inches on a slightly larger modern thin paper mount. Captioned in the negative in a narrow strip along the bottom of the image. This image has brown tones with good contrast. Taber Photo unknown
1890361995San Francisco: Taber Photo 1890. Ephemera. Very good. A medium format photograph possibly a gelatin silver print of an altar with a bearded god statue. The statue is decorated with peacock feathers placed on a carved wooden altar. Pots and urns of various sizes sit on the altar in front of the idol.

7-3/4 by 9-3/4 inches. The photograph is captioned in the image in a narrow strip along the bottom of the print. This image is not listed in Taber's ca. 1889 catalog of images. The image is sharp and has good gray tonal range. It is mounted on thin white cardstock possibly contemporary with the photograph but trimmed in recent times near the edge of the image. The mount and photograph are somewhat wavy. Taber Photo unknown

64429San Francisco: Taber Photo. Photograph. Very Good. Photograph 4 7/8 x 7 7/8" on a gray mount 12 1/2 x 18 3/4". Tiny loss to the top fore-edge corner of the mount. Two short closed tears with a 1 1/2" crease between them to the top edge. I. W. Taber 1830-1912 opened his gallery on San Francisco's Montgomery Street in 1871. His business was well known for portraiture and and a plethora of California and Western views- quite a few of which were the unacknowledged works of other photographers. Taber enjoyed success outside of California as well. He was sent to London in 1897 to photograph the pageant of the Queen Victoria Jubilee. Tragically Taber's career came to a halt when he lost his gallery and negative collection in 1906 due to the San Francisco earthquake and fire. Information from Online Archive of California.
