Fascinating work that celibrates the history and glory of the French Marine and its equipages. Written and privately published in 1943 during the Nazi-occupation of France this book was not openly circulated at the time. However in 1944 the limited edition out of which this is one copy sold for 3000 Francs/copy. Magnificently illustrated with blue in-text idrawings throughout and 20 full-page aquarells protected by tissue guard. In French. Good- condition. Printed by subscription at 950 copies. Out of them 455 copies were printed "sur velin pur chiffon fililgrane Marais numerotes" printed on pure filigree chiffon vellum paper; numbered series. This copy is one of them. The book was published in 1748 and immediately prosecuted and burned by the French court of justice. The book was scandalous for several reasons such as the character believed to depict Marie Leszczynska wife of Louis XV. The volume was also a huge success reprinted 13 times in the first year.
