Very good: light wear a hint of toning to leaves.<br /> <br /> This is a detailed and heavily illustrated travelogue written by an AME Zion Elder and religious educator Jacob W. Powell. The first three pages of the book include a detailed chronology of Powell's life along with his numerous certifications related to religious teaching. From it we learn that Powell was born a Methodist Episcopalian in 1866 and converted to the AME Zion Church in Boston in 1881. He worked as a stenographer for a number of religious and civil clients before becoming ordained a Deacon and later Elder. Powell served as Pastor of a few AME Zion and Baptist churches and according to this book's dedication taught over 4000 students during his 54-year career. <br /> <br /> The book is simultaneously a travel log travel guide and collection of Powell's short essays on various religious subjects. It relays Powell's account of his six-week tour and is broken up into 25 chapters each with numerous subdivisions. Powell described his observations of myriad sights and experiences throughout Rome Naples Genoa Marseilles Alexandria and Cairo and Palestine. He related an incident involving a “Mohammedan lad†who took a liking to him and his group while they were visiting mosques surmising that “perhaps my similar complexion helped to draw him toward me†and of whom he snapped a photograph angering a crowd of adults who had gathered nearby. His writing while often rambling is also often action-packed such as this near accident returning to Marseilles:<br /> <br /> “ANOTHER THRILLING INCIDENT—as it looked to me our ship came perilously near 'going on to rocks' just before we reached the narrow outlet from Marseilles Harbor . . . . jagged rocks loomed ominously on either side of this narrow outlet as the 'Excalibur' pushed her prow forward. Hardly any saw the danger until the Captain in the pilot house looked out of his window and shouted to his deck officers 'Throw out your sheet anchor!' Immediately the command was obeyed good discipline aboard this ship and the staunch vessel stood fast within fifty yards or so from the perilous rocks!â€<br /> <br /> Powell's descriptions are complemented by detailed historical and geographical data as well as 60 plates of maps illustrations and photographic images. He clearly intended this to be a guide book as well as he provided histories of seemingly countless tourist destinations as well as information on languages locals cities he did not get to visit and more. He also waxed on many religious topics including the history of Christianity provided brief statements of the beliefs of Muslims and Jews and devoted four pages to his outline on the symbolism of the book of Revelation.<br /> <br /> Also of note is a rare piece of ephemera laid in to the book: Powell's promotional order form for this book as well as others he'd written along with a number of blurbs.<br /> <br /> A meticulous and well-illustrated travelogue and collection of religious essays by an African American educator and religious leader. This volume written by Jewella Civil War soldier had started the process of becoming a Mason but was interrupted two weeks later by joining the Union army in 1862. After serving in the winter of 1865/66 he became Master Mason. The book contains the stories of soldiers who when captured by the Confederates or the Federal Army once they were known to be a Mason were treated as brothers and well cared for. Cleary Jewell had solicited these stories as they are mostly signed by the former soldier/Mason who experienced these considerations. The book also contains a brief autobiography of Jewell as well as some thoughts on Masonry war and related subjects. The Masonry scholar Michael A Halleran wrote in the journal "Heredom" suggesting the Masonry affiliation aided prisoners on both sides of the conflict. Jewell's book is considered one of the earliest works addressing the Freemasonry's role in the Civil War though Halleran does criticize it for being "anecdotal." See volume 15 2007 of "Heredom." The fairy tales include the title story Rapunzel Rumpelstiltskin and nineteen others.<br /> <br /> Nielsen 1886–1957 was born in Denmark. He is best known for his work in the United States. He worked for the Walt Disney Company on the animated films Fantasia The Little Mermaid and Sleeping Beauty.<br /> <br /> xii 13–310 pages. First trade edition first printing with the B date code on the copyright page. A near fine copy; for this version the plates are not protected with tissue guards and there is offsetting to the facing pages as a result. There are a couple of leaves with spots at the bottom margin. This copy has been rebound in full burgundy morocco with all edges gilt. The covers are delicately decorated with a wavy gilt border. The spine is divided into six panels with false bands; each panel is stamped in gilt. The endpapers are marbled paper with metallic gold ink highlights. The original cover and spine are laid down at the back.<br /> <br /> Doran issued a 600-copy signed limited edition in 1925 with the text printed in two colors contemporaneous with the UK signed limited. That is the first US edition; this trade issue followed the next year based on newspaper reviews and therefore I assume does not have the publisher's logo on the copyright page—which is how Doran usually denotes a first printing. A marvelous signed autograph letter from Max Jacob 1876-1944 to his close friend and protégé Maurice Morel "l'abbé Morel" 1908-1991. 2 pp front and back of a leaf measuring 27 x 21 cm about 400 words written neatly in ink. Jacob had encouraged Morel to paint in 1925 when the latter was only 17 and had organized his first exhibition. Morel became a successful painter. In 1934 Morel was ordained a Roman Catholic priest. The present letter begins with a meditation on communication and friendship as Jacob forgives Morel for not having written for some time: "Le silence est proportionnel à la sécurité en matière d'amitié. Mes meilleurs amis sont ceux qui m'écrivent le moins : c'est un fait. Les relations veulent être cultivées les amitiés s'assurent elles-mêmes sans certificat épistolaire. Je ne suis nullement surpris de trouver les plus silencieux de mes amis quand l'ai besoin d'eux ou qu'ils ont besoin de moi." The letter is dated August 18 and the envelope included is postmarked August 20 1943 several months before Jacob's arrest by the Gestapo and his death. A bit of toning but in very good condition. He moves on to spiritual matters: "Je suis de votre avis sur le manque de respect envers Dieu plus grand que le manque d'amour : c'est une preuve de crise de l'intelligence car pour respecter il faut comprendre ou comprendre au moins qu'on ne comprend pas. Prenez garde en luttant contre le sentimentalisme de dessécher complètement ces coeurs déjà tellement arides : pour la métaphysique je vous la livre. Le symbolisme est à la base de toutes les religions parce que le signe est l'idée et que l'idée se confond avec la réalité. C'est pourquoi il est dit : "que votre nom soit sanctifié." car le nom est le signe de la personne." The letter is dated February 28 1941 as is the postmark on the envelope included. Quarto; tan buckram with titles and decorations stamped in brown on front and rear covers; 247pp. A lovely fine copy free of soiling or wear. There was a simultaneous trade issue in pictorial wrappers.<br /> <br /> The very scarce limited issue of this compilation of Burck's Depression-era cartoons most originally published in the Daily Worker and The New Masses. Burck trained at the Art Students' League under Boardman Robinson; became the full-time editorial cartoonist for the Daily Worker in 1929 and worked as a political cartoonist for the rest of his life though following a 1936 trip to the Soviet Union he renounced Communism and began working for mainstream periodicals including the St. Louis Post Dispatch and the Chicago Daily Times. He won a Pulitzer Prize in 1941; survived a period of persecution during the 1950s Red Scare and continued to produce new work until shortly before his death in 1982. This volume quite scarce and the few copies we have seen previously were well-worn. The Daily Worker unknown

Raised bands. Decorative endpapers. Pictorial title page printed in black & red against a yellow the color Jews were forced to wear background. It depicts both the suffering and the hope for redemption of the Jewish people. The bottom shows life in the concentration camp and the top shows the yearning for a new Jerusalem. The images are attributed to the artist Grisha Rosenkranz who was active in the DP camps. Text in Hebrew states: "As afflicted prisoners there we sat learned and prayed in secret."<br /> <br /> This volume of "Keddushin" the first of the two printed was the precursor to the famous full 19-volume set known as the "Survivors' Talmud" or the "US Army Talmud" so-called because it was the first complete Talmud printed in Europe after the Holocaust. At the end of the war Jewish survivors and residents of the DP camps had few or no books. The efforts to provide resources to Jews without access to Talmud study in the direct aftermath of the war fell primarily upon the shoulders of two Lithuanian Rabbis Samuel Abba Snieg chief rabbi of the US occupied zone and Samuel Jacob Rose both survivors of Dachau. It was accomplished utilizing two odd volumes of the 1886 Romm edition of the Talmud printed in Vilna tractates Keddushin and Nedarim found at the monastery in St. Ottilien. Printing plates for these volumes were created using a photomechanical offset process. It should be noted that when the full set of the Talmud was eventually published it was derived from the later Vilna editions which contain additional rabbinic commentary not found in the earlier editions.<br /> <br /> The rabbis' intent from the very beginning was to print a complete set of the Talmud however these two tractates were the only ones found in good enough to reproduce. Later with the assistance of Rabbis Philip S. Bernstein and Abraham Klausner they were able to print a complete set in Heidelberg in 1948 The Survivors' Talmud. <br /> <br /> There is some dampstain rippling to the lower fifth of the text with an attendant tidemark that is mostly in the blank bottom margin but occasionally extends into the text readability is not affected. Scarce. Alternate title: Survivors' Talmud<br /> <br /> Grisha Rosenkranz aka Gregory Rosenkranz was a Lithuanian-born Jewish artist and Hebrew teacher. In addition to his work on the illustrations for these volumes of the Talmud he was an active artist in the DP camps after the war and was known to have designed a theater sets for a play produced in the camps. Later he emigrated to the United States eventually settling in Miami where he taught Hebrew Jewish studies and art.
