"Together with Leonard George Rowntree 1883-1859 and Benjamin Bernard Turner 1971-1945 John Jacob Abel 1857-1938 devised what they called a "vividiffusion" apparatus consisting of a series of tubes surrounded by fluid. They first demonstrated the apparatus at the Physiological Congress in Groningen in 1914. By allowing arterial blood to enter at one end of the connection and later return to circulation through the venous connection after dialysis they were able to demonstrate the existence of free amino acids in blood. By isolating these amino acids from blood circulation Abel conducted various subsequent researches on the structure of proteins in the blood. Not only did Abel use the apparatus for his research work he also realized the great clinical potential such dialysis machine would have on managing the damaging effects of renal failure. The vividiffusion apparatus Abel devised is the precursor to the modern day dialysis machine." He summarized his work in a paper published in 1913 "On the Removal of Diffusable Substances from the Circulating Blood by Means of Dialysis" by Transfusion Science. John Jacob Abel 1857-1938 was an American biochemist and pharmacologist. He established the pharmacology department at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1893 and then became America's first full-time professor of pharmacology. During his time at Hopkins he made several important medical advancements especially in the field of hormone extraction. In addition to his laboratory work he founded several significant scientific journals such as the Journal of Biological Chemistry and the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. Light shelf wear minor soiling to cover cloth text block edges a bit toned by age. Firm binding clean interior. xiii443 pp. illus. w/ b&w photographic plates drawings in text. 14th ptg.: Nov. 1908. Notably well preserved presentation copy showing a pastedown 4" x 3.5" mounted on front fixed endpaper inscribed "Faithfully yours / Jacob A. Riis / Christmas 1909." Mounted on the adjacent front flyleaf is the calling card of the recipient Mr. William W. J. Warren inscribed as follows: "Christmas 1909. -- / Mr. Riss sic called today -- / he gave me his autograph / for front cover of book." Also signed by a later owner William Duncan along top edge of front flyleaf. Warren is mentioned on p. 435 of Riis's text as W. W. J. Warren "faithful in good and in evil report" among the author's concluding acknowledgments where a second calling card stained by rust from a paper clip no long present is laid in pp. 435-440 are slightly indented from the clip and pp. 434 440 and 441 show a light rust impression. According to his obituary in American Stationer & Office Manager Vol. 88 Warren 1844-1921 was president of Stewart Warren & Co. a stationery manufacturing firm located at 129 Lafayette St. in New York a personal friend of Henry Ward Beecher and lived in the Richmond Hill section of Brooklyn as the next-door neighbor of Riis until the latter moved to Barre MA where he died in 1914. Original illustrated edition of an influential autobiography by the pioneering documentarian photographer and social reformer whose "How the Other Half Lives" was a landmark expose of living conditions in the Lower East Side tenements that led to reforms and provided Riis with an international reputation. There is an inscription on the front endpaper indicating its use by the War Office Selection Board in 1942. The Board was a scheme by British Army psychiatrists to discover and develop officer candidates and Moreno's sociometrics were influential in Eric Trist and Wilfred Bion's experiment of Regimental Nomination where units were encouraged to nominate candidates.<br /> Linton C. Freeman identified four defining properties of social network analysis: 1 It involves the intuition that links among social actors are important. 2 It is based on the collection and analysis of data that record social relations that link actors. 3 It draws heavily on graphic imagery to reveal and display the patterning of those links. And 4 it develops mathematical and computational models to describe and explain those patterns.<br /> He wrote "Until the 1930s however no one had used all four properties at the same time. Modern social network analysis was introduced by a psychiatrist Jacob L. Moreno and a psychologist Helen Jennings. They conducted elaborate research first among the inmates of a prison later in a reform school for girls. Moreno and Jennings named their approach sociometry." A chapter on psychological geography anticipates the work of the Lettrist International.<br /> <br /> "Moreno founded psychodrama and pioneered group psychotherapy. Apart from its psychiatric and sociological significance this work contained some of the earliest graphic depictions of social networks— data visualization methods later applied to numerous other disciplines. Inscribed first edition of this first book by the National Director of CORE association copy to activist and political scientist Charles V. Hamilton with his notes and marginalia throughout. As co-founder 1942 and eventual director 1961 of the Congress Of Racial Equity - and through its ethos of nonviolence later championed by Martin Luther King jr. - Farmer was instrumental in pioneering what would become some of the Civil Rights movement's most high-profile actions including sit-ins jail-ins and Freedom Rides. Farmer was Program Director for the NAACP before ascending to CORE director would eventually serve as assistant secretary of health education and welfare under Nixon and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Bill Clinton. Charles V. Hamilton co-authored the best-selling and enormously influential BLACK POWER: THE POLITICS OF LIBERATION IN AMERICA 1967 with Kwame Ture formerly: Stokely Carmichael a manifesto which would heavily inform the movement of the same name and functionally introduce the concept of "institutional racism." Hamilton's influence in the field of political science would continue through his long tenure as a professor at Columbia University. This copy benefits from his scholarly eye as it contains considerable notes by Hamilton on the rear endpaper with numbered references to specific pages and passages. An incredible association between two pivotal figures of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. 8.5'' x 5.75''.
