69724Bruxelles Société Typografique Belge; Leipzig Wahlen 1842. Two lithographed broadsides 91.0 x 54.5 cm and 88.0 x 54.5 cm. = A fine and rare work by the French medical doctor Jean-Baptiste Marc Bourgery 1797-1849 and the French painter and lithographer Nicolas Henri Jacob 1782-1871 both better known from their later published Traité complet de l'anatomie de l'homme comprenant l'anatomie chirurgicale et la médecine opératoire. The current work fully titled Anatomie élémentaire en 20 planches avec un texte explicatif à part formant un manuel complet d'anatomie physiologique consists of a series of twenty very large anatomical plates and an additional small explanatory textbook here not included. From this suite these are two matching plates namely Planche 3 Myologie et Aponévrologie - Plan anterieur or muscles and nerves frontal and Planche 5 Myologie Aponévrologie or muscles and blood vessels seen dorsally. These two plates obviously form a pair as the view is identical and the subjects are closely related. A few skilful repairs. Since these plates were meant to be used in medical schools and hospitals they are usually found well-used with spotting creasing chipping annotations stamps etc. but this set is unusually clean and bright. Very rare in this fine condition. unknown

Kupferstichtafel Halbleder im Stil d.Zt.; St.a.Tit.; frisches unbeschnittenes Exemplar. First Edition rare not cut and on extra strong paper! Posthumously published is this monumental work on the internal and external diseases of the head by the famous Swiss anatomist J.L. Wepfer. Preceded by a biographical essay "Memora Wepferiana" written by the eminent physician J.C. Brunner the discoverer of the duodenal glands. Recording nearly 50 years' practice in neurological diseases the volume contains 222 case histories including several dealing with apoplexy the hemorrhagic nature of which had been discovered by Johann Jakob Wepfer 1620-1695. A copious index terminates the volume. "In his treatise Observationes medico-practicae de affectibus capitis internis et externis Medico-practical observations on the internal and external diseases of the head published posthumously by his grandchildren Bemhardin and Georg Michael Wepfer in 1727" "there were six observations about specific ear diseases. One concerned a long-standing cancer which had completely destroyed the auricle two were related to "unpleasant hearing" obauditio a difficult word to translate: it normally means obedience or unpleasant hearing. In medicine it sometimes means impaired hearing but also paracusis or head tinnitus and three discussed "ear tinnitus". Wepfer explained in particular that ear tinnitus accompanying diseases of the ear was due to the obstruction of air-flow from the ear by cerumen secretions or occlusion of the "canal which goes to the palate" i.e. Eustachian tube which could be easily demonstrated. If a healthy ear was occluded by a finger or if a drinking cup was held close to it a muffled sound was clearly perceived but individuals suffering from subjective noises did not hear any additional sound. He also observed that subjective noises could occur not only in ear disease but also in head disease such as hemicrania "obtuse head" "rotatory and staggering vertigo" and hysterical convulsions. Wepfer's therapy was as complicated as it was disputable. For example he advocated curing tinnitus by loud noises. This was supposed to remove from the ear the serous fluid causing tinnitus. His description of vertigo as a symptom of various diseases is considered the best source in the medical literature before the 19th century." Albert Mudry The History of Otology 2015 p.220 Hirsch-H. The papers were published at the same time in German both here in Annalen and in Schweiger's Journal and in French. By running many hundreds of analysis of chemical compounds he gave so many examples of the law of definite proportions that the world of chemistry could no longer doubt its validity and in so doing he gave experimental evidence to the atomic theory. He hereby laid a solid fundation for the further development of chemistry.According to Söderbaum Jac. Berzelius 2 p.12 "It was a giant work one of the most importent in the history of chemistry which was here presented. One is even more impressed when one remembers that it was a pioneer undertaking in every sense of the term. Analytic and synthetic methods existed before Berzelius' time to be sure but there were no precise methods of the sort which he required. They all had to be elaborated at the cost of time and labour."J. Erik Jorpes "Jac. Berzelius" p.45."In general Berzelius's efforts were directed toward the consolidation and extension of the atomic theory. He improved chemical analysis and determined the composition of a large number of compounds thus verifying the laws of constant and multiple proportions and furnishing the most accurate equivalent weights then available. By ingenious methods he arrived at the correct atomic composition of most common substances and thus was enabled to draw up in 1826 a table of atomic weights very nearly identical with the modern one."Leicester & Klicktein "A Source Book in Chemistry" p. 258.Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1810-20 C. </em> unknown
