185928994Columbus Ohio 1859. Caption title as issued. 16pp untrimmed. Margin-foxing Good.

The occasion was a celebration of German Democrats "whose thrifty and pleasant homes are mostly in the Fifth Ward." In this scarce pamphlet Cox lauds the German opposition to tyranny their love of "Constitutional government and law;" and their distrust of anarchy and disorder expressed in those annoying "Woman Rights Free Love and Abolition Conventions." Most recently such destructive "egotistical faith" has shown itself in the John Brown Invasion and in the doctrines of the Republican Party. "When Brown shoots down the citizens at the Armory he appeals to the God of the oppressed as his judge and all the Ismatics of New England and Ohio applaud the murderer as a martyr." And when Republicans deny the right of territories to decide whether to permit slavery "they deny to majorities the right to rule."
OCLC 34559434 3- OH Hist. Soc. U TX Hist. Soc. W. 195229272Roccasinibalda Italia: Caresse Crosby n.d. ca. 1952-1954. First Edition. Octavo broadside 21cm.; Fine. Text entirely in Italian. Manifesto of the pacifist Citizens of the World movement which Caresse Crosby founder of the Black Sun Press established shortly after the end of World War II. This flyer presumably issued after her and the movement's expulsion from Greece where she had initially attempted to set up headquarters. The Greek government gave the reason that the movement was "conceived and initaited by aliens yet tending toward the creation of a super-national organization which may exercise international political influence" cf. Linda Hamalian The Cramoisy Queen: A Life of Caresse Crosby 2009 p. 169. The imprint at the bottom is of Crosby's 16th-century castle Roccasinibalda located in the Province of Rieti which she purchased ca. 1952. There is a chance this came prior to Crosby's expulsion from Greece however; the text mentions the movement's taking inspiration "dall'Umanesimo Greco" and a Greek language Manifesto was also published about the same time. A scarce item: OCLC locates 3 copies as of March 2016 at NYU Indiana U. and Brown. Caresse Crosby unknown books

Jacob Cushing 1730-1809 was born in Shrewsbury Massachusetts and graduated from Harvard in 1748. He was ordained in Waltham Massachusetts and became the pastor there in 1752. During the Revolutionary War he served as scribe of the State Convention of the Clergy. Like some of his other sermons this is a somewhat scarce title however he did publish a number of sermons between 1764-1798. This is also appears to be an unusual copy as both Evans and Sabin indicate 39 pages in their listing but this copy has only 30. However the sermon winds down on page 30 and The End is clearly indicated on the bottom of the page. Unclear if there were any subsequent additional pages which would account for the difference. Jacket reverse lightly foxed remainder mark on page base. 2000 Hard Cover. xv 5 538 pp. "In 1270 a scholarly Jewish merchant called Jacob d'Ancona set out on a voyage from Italy. A year later he arrived in China at the coastal metropolis of Zaitun the "City of Light" now known as Quanzhou four years before Marco Polo arrived at Xanadu in 1275. Nothing was known of this epochal journey until 1990 when David Selbourne was shown d'Ancona's account of his travels a remarkable manuscript that had been hidden from public view for more than seven centuries. Eventually translated and edited by Selbourne and published in Great Britain in October 1997 as The City of Light the account was praised as providing an unparalleled insight into life in the medieval world. Controversy followed. Selbourne had pledged to the manuscript's owner that he would not reveal its whereabouts and that raised doubts about its authenticity. As a result of U.S. sinologists' criticism of plans for American publication the first edition was canceled. Now a year later Birch Lane Press happily publishes the controversial work. Criticisms of the textual evidence of d'Ancona's account have been answered by Selbourne. Most notably other academics--particularly and significantly in China--have come to the support of d'Ancona's account. The work is to be published in a Chinese translation. Vivid and insightful this account has great historical significance. It not only describes the adventures of a medieval trader but also comments on Chinese society and manners through the eyes of a European man of learning. The City of Light brings spectacularly to life d'Ancona's encounter with one of the world's great civilizations. Citadel Press hardcover books
