An early reference work on gold coins from California and other states issued for collectors and those dealing in the money trade. The authors were assayers of the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. The first edition of this work issued in 1850 contained several samples of genuine California gold ore and is notably scarce. This revised edition was issued without the samples but contains new material on the California gold situation and California coins; Mormon coins; and other West Coast imprints. There are 5 handsome engraved plates at the end of the book showing gold coins from California and the west coast; Mormon coins; gold ingots; mining company issues; coins from Central America; and much more. The second half of the book written by Du Bois is devoted to ancient coins in the U.S. Mint's private collection including coins from the Roman Empire Persia the Byzantine era and more. This collection was formed in 1838 with Du Bois serving as its first curator. Cowan p. 76; Kuritz 217b; Sabin 21788.

George P. Putnam hardcover books

Manchester: The Cloister Press Ltd. 1943.

An exceedingly rare Epstein exhibition catalogue signed by the artist; WorldCat records only the BL copy. As explained on the verso of the title-page 50 percent of sales from this exhibition were to be given to the Merchant Navy Comforts Service. Epstein writes a brief introduction about the works he has selected: "The works in this collection which date from so early as the 'Marcelle' 1920 to the Chinese Girl 'Chia Pi' Precious Jewel 1942 cover a period long enough to embody at any rate a fairly comprehensive development. The works are all in bronze and reflect immediate reactions to things persons seen and treated realistically and might seem to leave out those larger imaginative carvings and bronzes such as 'Genesis' 'Jacob and the Angel' the 'Ecce Homo' which directly embody abstruse philosophical or humanistic and religious themes. But to my mind and method of treatment the study however small must reflect not only the sculptor's vision but his most profound inner feeling before embodied form whatever the shape. I would destroy the legend of the 'dual personality'."

This volume lists 46 paintings sculptures watercolors and drawings all priced. 40578FALKE Jacob Von. ART IN THE HOUSE. Boston: L. Prang 1879. 4to. Publisher's full brown morocco elaborately bli and gilt stamped all edges gilt. xxx 356 pages added chromolithographic ti page 60 plates. First American edition. Holzenberg # 77. Falke was perhaps the most important German writer on taste in the Aesthetic era. He has written a history of interior decoration--beginning with the Greco-Roman house through the eighteenth century. Critical observations on style and harmony are filtered through aesthetic principles. Successive chapters deal with decorating the house in various stages: the floor wall ornaments ceilings furniture and decorations on the table. His work reflec many of the "artistic" principles in vogue in England and elsewhere: the dependence of Form on function; the importance of good design in everyday living; and the preferred use of historical styles as inspiration rather tha strict models for modern decor. This edition was translated by C.C. Perkins from the third German edition. The 60 plates are a combination of five chromolithographs and 55 albertypes and typographic etchings. In addition there are one hundred and sixty-six in-text figures. Front cover with a gilt stamped vignette; interior of front hinge neatly reinforced; some light foxin Otherwise a very good copy of a heavy book usually found in shaken and worn condition. unknown books
