184055347Providence: printed by B.T. Albro 1840. First edition 12mo pp. 11 1; bottom half of text dampstained throughout stitching broken; good. "The formation of this Association was the beginning of the great movement for the extension of suffrage and formation of a Constitution in Rhode Island. It was drawn up by Jacob Friese" Sabin quoting Bartlett. At the time more than half of the adult males were denied the vote. The suffragists intended to test whether in fact the U.S. Constitution guaranteed to every State a republican form of government. The Association in fact determined to by-pass the General Assembly and to draft and ratify a written constitution for the state. See Patrick Conley's study of the Dorr Rebellion contained in Democracy in Decline 1977. Thomas Dorr himself remained aloof from the Association until May 1841. 1807009322London to Boston 1807. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This two-page stampless folded letter measures 14.5" x 9" unfolded. It is datelined "London 7th Jany. 1807" with a manuscript annotation "per Enterprise via New York" in the lower left corner. There is "36" rate marking along with a circular postmark in red that reads "New-York Mar. 9" and a matching red "Ship" handstamp. During opening a small piece was cut from the back to remove the wax seal. <br /><br />Of special interest is a clear strike of an oval handstamp on the reverse that reads <p style="margin-left:3%; margin-right:3%;">"Daniel's Life Preserver in case of Shipwreck Bathing & Wapping A National Concern Established 1806."<p>It would appear that the Life Preserver hand stamp only served as an advertisement as there is no postal reason for it to have been applied. <br /><br />Although there no records tying Jacob Cram to the Daniel's firm Parker & Poor were general merchants in Boston and major importers of British goods. Although the letter contents do not pertain to life preservers it is likely that the hand stamp was applied as an advertisement for the relatively new product. <br /><br />Following his grammar school education Francis Columbine Daniel was apprenticed in 1779 to a surgeon and apothecary in the East London Thames River community of Wapping and nine years later he opened his own office nearby. <br /><br />At the time the area was a hub of naval and maritime activity and having witnessed many drownings Daniel determined to find a way to save the lives of mariners and passengers who fell into the Thames. To that end he designed an "air jacket" that could be carried in a coat pocket and quickly inflated by means of a silver tube after which it would keep a wearer's head arms and upper body above the water surface. <br /><br />As part of his testing process Daniels conducted startling public demonstrations. In 1805 several men wearing early versions of his jacket jumped off the London Bridge and floated downstream while smoking pipes or playing musical instruments to the astonishment of a gathering crowd. The following year at a London regatta two men wearing his devices appeared to walk on the water while carrying a giant sack full of ships' biscuits and a third repeatedly fired a horse pistol into the air. <br /><br />Later that year Daniel began marketing his life preserver after it had received a gold medal from the Royal Humane Society. <br /><br />Exceptionally scarce. At time of listing there are no other examples of this handstamp for sale in the philatelic or ephemera trade. There are no records of other examples having been sold at auction and none are known to be held by institutions. <br /><br /> books

1852241579London: James Waton 1852. Disbound. Holyoake a leader of the English secularist movement in fact he coined the work "secularist" and freethinker became quite well-known as the last person convicted under the English blasphemy laws. He was a tireless social reformer advocating that the government should help the poor and working classes now and not in some future life. His little book "Why do the clergy avoid discussion" resulted in a six night debate between Holyoake and the Rev. Brewis Grant in 1853. Holyoake asserted that the clergy depend upon "railing in the sacred enclosures of their pulpits". James Waton unknown books

17124343Rome: Francesco Gonzaga 1712. Extremely rare first edition of this luxuriously illustrated anthology of extracts from papal sermons delivered between 1703-09 in Latin prose and facing Italian verse: an unusual example of Baroque ecclesiastical culture from the pontificate of Clement XI. On the basis of extreme rarity and contents the volume numbers among those commemorative and honorific volumes which were never sold in the trade but offered as a ceremonial gift to cardinals ambassadors and other important personagescorroborated by the ownership inscription in the present volume by a monsignor during Clements papacy. The volume is singular in our experience for its contents. Latin extracts of Clements sermons generally rather brief are printed on the left side of the page then freely and somewhat copiously versified in Italian by the poet Guidi. The sparsity of the elegantly printed text leaves positively wasteful margins! Each sermon is preceded by a full-page engraving on the subject of the sermon the Holy Family adoring the Christ Child for Christmas the Resurrection for Easter etc. designed by Pietro Leone Ghezzi one of the principal artists in Clements retinue and engraved by Roman engravers generally also associated with Clementine projects Frey van Westerhout etc. The designs were made expressly for the present volume and are echoed as it were in a series of initials and vignettes devoted to the same theme; as such they must have been engraved for the present volume and not simply taken from the printers stock. If somewhat overshadowed by Maratti in his lifetime and by his epoch-making role as the first professional caricaturist Ghezzi 1674-1755 was nonetheless an important painter of religious subjects who worked on Albanis most prestigious public projects. The surfaces of Ghezzis paintings were considerably less finished than those of Maratti and he seems more receptive to Venetian color and unfinishednessthus showing a different aspect of Albani taste. Ghezzi was commissioned in 1712 the year this book was published to paint The Election of St. Fabian for the Albani Chapel in S. Sebastiano fuori le Mura. Within the next decade he helped paint the frescos the ancient basilica of S. Clemente and the nave decoration of St. John Lateran. His portraits including one of Clement XI are unusually informal and realistic possibly due to Ghezzis experience at caricature. Alessandro Guidi 1650-1712 who translated the sermons was a prolific Arcadian poet. OCLC records a single copy Berkeley and we locate no additional American copies. Large 4to. 28 x 20.5 cm engraved portrait of Clement XI xvi pp. full-page engraving 213 pp. including 5 full-page engravings paginated with text. 18th-c. vellum over boards spine with 5 raised bands and red morocco label gilt-stamped; covers with large blind-tooled central ornament blind-tooled filets and ornaments.
