1873140948037Vienna: L. C. Zamarski & C. Dittmarsch 1873. The Babylonian Talmud complete in 24 books bound in 12 volumes. The title page to the first volume is undated but typically dated 1864 in institutional catalogs; the second volume is dated 1866 the last volume is dated 1872 but the last page of the Taharot Vol. XXIV is dated 1873. Tall quarto each volume measuring 14" x 10". Bound in half cloth and paper-covered boards leather spine labels with gilt lettering. Title pages printed in red black yellow and gilt. Very Good overall lots of edge wear with exposed boards chipping toning and wear to spines. Cloth of volume 7 appears to have been inexpertly repaired; binding tape repair to rear hinge. Other than that the bindings are sturdy; contents have a little foxing with age. Occasional marginal notes presumably from either Ernest or Walter Jacob; a few pages of notes in Hebrew laid in as well.
This set has a very distinguished provenance: it came from the estate of Walter Jacob a significant leader in Reform Judaism in America author of 43 books and the chief rabbi at Rodef Shalom in Pittsburgh. His father Ernest Israel Jacob 1899-1974 was district rabbi of Augsburg and was deported to Dachau concentration camp for several months after Kristallnacht in 1938; he eventually emigrated to the US. Walter's grandfather Benno Jacob was considered one of the great biblical commentators of liberal Judaism. Ernest Jacob has written a note on the front pastedown of the first volume: "The textual corrections and marginal annotations in this Vienna edition of the Babylonian Talmud are by the late orientalist Samuel Landauer a great Aramaic scholar formally librarian of the University library at Strasbourg Alsace from whose estate I bought this work. Ernest I. Jacob."
A lovely 19th century Hebrew edition of the central text of Rabbinic Judaism and the source of Jewish law and theology compiled in the 3rd to 6th centuries in Mesopotamia.
International buyers please note: shipping this set outside the United States will require extra charges due to its weight and size. Very good tidy copies.

A rather charming collection of poetry from the early 20th century Scottish school showcasing the work of luminaries like Buchan and Munro all edited and brought together by C.M. Grieve and originally issued between 1920 and 1921 to showcase the contemorary voices of Scottish poetry. Series I and Series II were later combined apparently by the simple expedient of taking all the original leftover unbound sheets and cramming them in together in a single volume binding. A charming and rather peculiar collection of carefully chosen poetry and poets. T. Foulis unknown

179513033N.p. likely Maryland: January 20 1795. 2pp. with integral leaf addressed and docketed. Old mailing folds minor unobtrusive chipping to edges some old tape repairs some toning. Margins of address leaf reinforced with later sheet. Overall good condition. A document of almost pure irony in which a Maryland militia member who served for the government during the Whiskey Rebellion petitions the governor of Maryland for relief from a fine of 600 pounds of tobacco levied on him and his wife for.selling whiskey without a license. Apparently during the time in which Cable "was drafted to go against the insurgents and during his absence" Cable's wife "sold liquor for the support of her family to wit 3 small children." Upon his return from service and during the January 1795 term of the Baltimore County court Cable "was presented for selling liquors without license and was fined 600 lbs of Toba for said offence." Here Cable asks Governor Stone and the "Home Council" for forgiveness of the fine.

It worked. According to a note on the verso signed by three "Justices of Baltimore County Court" they found "compassion" for Cable "in remitting the fine imposed as stated in the within Petition." Though the central issue of the Whiskey Rebellion was the 1791 excise tax on whiskey which angered farmers in western Pennsylvania enough to violently resist it it is some level of irony that Cable asks for mercy from the court for selling liquor without a license incurred while he was fighting the farmers resisting the whiskey tax.
