Ende 1798 etwa besuchte der aus Clausthal gebürtige und an den Universitäten Jena und Göttingen ausgebildete Arzt Jakob Friedrich Ludwig Lentin 1776-1803 die fränkische Bischofsstadt. Er schilderte seine dortigen Eindrücke in seiner in Briefform abgefassten 1800 in Berlin erschienenen Schrift Medizinische Bemerkungen auf einer literarischen Reise durch Deutschland. An Marcus' ärztlicher Praxis kritisierte Lentin dass der unbevorurtheilte Zuschauer . mit Misbilligung betrachten musse wie dieser Mann durch zu großen Enthusiasmus sich den Weg zur kalten Prüfung ungangbar machte. Margins a little frayed not affecting image a few small marginal tears repaired but very good.</p> <p>Excellent mezzotint portrait of German physician and botanist Christoph Jacob Trew after whom the East Indian plant genus Trewia is named. Trew was the author of the lavishly illustrated Hortus nitidissimis omnem per annum superbiens floribus 1750-86 and Plantae selectae quarum imagines ad exemplaria naturalia Londini in hortis curiosorum nutrita 1750-73 both with plates engraved after drawings by the noted 18th century botanical artist Georg Dionysius Ehret; the latter work has been described as "one of the great botanical iconographies" Lazarus and Pardoe p. 43. The present portrait appeared as a frontispiece to the Plantae selectae. Trew founded the periodical Commercium litterarium ad rei et medicinae scientiae naturalis one of the first general medical journals and from 1743 served as director of the Kaiserlich-Leopoldinisch-Carolingischen Akademie der Naturforscher. Trew's scientific correspondence numbering over 19000 letters is the largest such collection known; his natural history library of 34000 volumes is now at the University of Erlangen. An extensive history of philosophy by the author whose five-volume Historia Critica Philosophiae formed the basis of William Enfield's The History of Philosophy the first English language history of philosophy to treat thinkers beyond ancient history Locke Newton Hobbes Leibniz Descartes etc. Brucker is known primarily for his massive Historia Critica Philosophiae 5 volumes 1742-44 with an Appendix 1767. Passmore calls that work "the standard history of philosophy in the 18th century to which both Kant and the Encyclopaedists for example were very considerably indebted." 'The Idea of a History of Philosophy' in The Historiography of the History of Philosophy 'S-Gravenhage 1965. The present work contains 28 papers divided into three sections: Historico-Philosophica pp. 1-257; Historico-Literaria pp. 258-552; and Philologico-Critica pp. 553-608. The nine "observations" of the first part deal mainly with ancient philosophy with papers on: "number" in Plato and Pythagorian philosophy Brucker's dissertation; Pyrrhonism; Stoicism; the Alexandrian School et al.; as well as "Supplementa ad historiam de ideis exhibens" pp. 110-147 a supplement to Brucker's first book 1723. The second part opens pp. 258-290 with a paper that contains the first printing of six letters from Leibniz to Spizel Ravier 435. This section many of whose subjects appear to have connections with Augsburg also includes observations on Melanchthon's Hypotyposes theologicae 1521 sketches of the lives of Brucker's mentor Philipp Jakob Crophius the humanist Hieronymous Wolf and his student David Hoeschel as well as biographical sketches of several physicians. Ancient Arabic coins and the early study of the Kufic script First edition of this well-illustrated work on ancient Arabic numismatics in Kufic script - "one of the works which traditionally mark the birth of Arabic palaeography" D'Ottone - studying and illustrating the renowned collection of antiquities of Cardinal Stefano Borgia 1731-1804. Jacob Georg Christian Adler 1756-1834 studied Coptic Syriac and Arabic manuscripts and artefacts across Europe. His introduction to this work summarizes the state of the art in the field of Arabic numismatics quoting sources based on the study of major collections of ancient Arabic coins in Italy Spain England Germany Holland and Denmark. He mentions important scholars in the field including the traveller Carsten Niebuhr who visited places in modern-day Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Adler discusses the origin antiquity and ornaments of Arabic coins reproducing the original Arabic inscriptions. He noted that Muslims do not represent the Prophet Muhammad and God figuratively; thus unlike in Europe Arabic coins also do not bear rulers' effigies. A section is devoted to observations on the Kufic script diacritics and other philological observations. The following sections provide textual descriptions of the Arabic inscriptions on the coins Adler examined including those of the Abbasid Fatimid Ayyubid Seleucid Turkman and Atabeg dynasties from the Middle East and Spain. He also examined Arabic coins produced by Christians especially in Sicily under King Roger and his successors and provides a bilingual text on Arabo-Islamic coins and their history taken from a manuscript at El Escorial a text on Arabic seals and another on Druze coins. The detailed plates reproduce the Kufic script 101 Arabic coins both sides 6 Arabic seals and Druze idols and monumental inscriptions. Published the same year as the first edition in quarto. This is the French reply to an English memorial addressed to the courts of Europe stating their position on the war on the Ohio justifying their actions and setting forth their claims to the region west of the Alleghenies. Accusing the English of unprovoked aggression and foul play the French sought to demonstrate that it was Washington's 'assassination' of Jumonville in the Fort Necessity campaign among other offensive actions which had sparked the war. Most of the text is composed of 'pièces justificatives' comprising documents and letters written between 1749 and 1755 by La Jonquière Governor of New France Albemarle Rouillé General Braddock Contrecoeur Villiers Sir William Johnson George Washington and Robert Stobo an engineer with Washington who had planned Fort Necessity. Among the more important papers are translations of the instructions given to Braddock by the British Crown letters to and from Braddock and Sir William Johnson and various officials two of Johnson's 'harangues' to the Indians and the first printing although in French translation of extracts from the journal kept by George Washington in the 1754 expedition to fortify the forks of the Ohio that ended with the British surrender to the French at Fort Necessity in July 1754 pp. 109-146. This is quite distinct from Washington's first journal of his mission for Governor Dinwiddie late in 1753 printed at Williamsburg in 1754. Most of these British papers were seized by the French following the capitulation at Fort Necessity. An early work on the French and Indian War described by Lawrence Wroth in his John Carter Brown Library report for 1945-46' as "one of the most important documents in American colonial history." First published in 1740 with only 25 plates the present edition published posthumously represents the fullest realisation of the authors lifelong ambition bringing together his exquisitely engraved plates with additional material that was prepared but never published during his lifetime.In total the work comprises 33 engraved plates depicting 70 metamorphoses of butterflies moths and other winged insects each rendered with remarkable precision and enlivened by contemporary hand-colouring. The plates are notable not only for their scientific value representing a significant advance in the study of insect life cycles but also for their aesthetic brilliance combining delicate line engraving with vibrant colour and decorative botanical settings. Plate XII depicting a tulip is of particular charm. Houttuyn in his preface remarked upon the extraordinary patience and precision required for such studies noting that few enthusiasts possessed the dedication necessary to observe and record these transformations with accuracy. Second printing with some corrections after the first printing of the previous year of an early account of Lower California by the Jesuit Jacob Baegert. Baegert lived in Baja California from 1751 to 1768 and spent most of his time at the Mission of San Luis Gonzaga leaving after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. He provides important details on the culture of the Native Americans of the region including the Pericues Guiacuras and Cochiemes. Wagner states that the German Jesuits were especially dissatisfied toward the end of the Jesuit regime in California and Baegert's bitterness is evident in his book: ".it was a land full of ferocious beasts and even more ferocious Indians the soil was poor the water undrinkable and there was no fuel to be had." The fine and important map was made by a fellow Jesuit Ferdinand Consak and is described by Streeter as "most helpful in giving the location of the many Jesuit missions in Lower California. It also shows the route along the west coast of Mexico followed by Baegert in going to California in 1751 and his route out in 1768 after the expulsion of the Jesuits." The two plates apparently not issued with all copies depict male and female Californian Native Americans. Rare. The National Union Catalogue locates only three copies of the second issue. unknown

This present second edition of J. J. Scheuchzer's 1672-1733 scientific description of Switzerland is greatly enlarged and much rarer. The plates are mainly views and maps although there are also plates of geological profiles and samples scientific equipment and regional flora and fauna. From 1702 until 1711 Scheuchzer undertook yearly expeditions accompanied by friends and pupils. He was the first to systematically explore the Alps and became a pioneer in the fields of geology palaeontology and glaziology. The work offers historical details and together with Tschudi's chronicle it became one of the main sources for Schiller's "Wilhelm Tell". - A few tears in the folds of some maps and plates repaired.
