Michigan senator Jacob Merritt Howard 1805-1871 who had worked closely with Lincoln in drafting and passing the Thirteenth Amendment was a strong supporter of his measures including "emergency actions during the secession crisis and advocated 'severe exemplary and speedy punishment of the rebels. He was especially vocal on all matters pertaining to the confiscation of rebel property and the emancipation of slaves. He was also one of the most forceful advocates of the 1863 Conscription Act" ANBO. His ire extended to trying for treason the Confederate leaders. In December he wanted to know why Davis had not been put on trial and now despite it being well-known that Davis did not have complicity in Lincoln's murder he declared in this resolution that Davis be "charged with the crimes of having incited the assassination of Abraham Lincoln President of the United States and with the murder of soldiers of the Unites States held a prisoners of war during the rebellion and other cruel and barbarous practices in violation of the rules and usages of civilized war." Clement C. Clay was also to be tried. It appears that Merritt's resolution never made it to the floor for a second reading as was required by law. Scarce. We could find only one in auction or dealer sales records in 1964. FIRST EDITION OFFPRINT of the first announcement of the successful use of anesthesia during surgical operations one of the greatest discoveries of nineteenth-century medicine. A visitor to Boston Massachusetts would be well advised to take a stroll to the Ether Dome at Massachusetts General Hospital to see the amphitheater where surgery without pain began. On October 16 1846 dentist William T.G. Morton publicly performed a painless surgery through the use of general anesthesia thereby transforming surgical medicine and marking one of the greatest advances in medicine one that not only liberated patients from pain but enabled surgeons to perform more extensive operations. <br /> <br /> Offered here is the first edition offprint of the first announcement of Morton's seminal achievement as reported by Henry Jacob Bigelow in the November 18 1846 issue of The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal Vol. XXXV No. 16 pp. 309-316. Interestingly the offprint omits the last seven paragraphs from the journal article critical of the patent-holders: Drs. Morton and Charles T. Jackson. The redacted paragraphs likely indicates the offprint was issued shortly after the journal. <br /> <br /> Offprint from: The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal vol. XXXV No. 16. 8 pages. Baltimore 1836. </p><p>Only Edition of "an abridgement of a large work by the same author which has been highly approved and for which among others the following testimonial has been obtained." according to a pink "Printed Advertisement" pasted inside front cover bearing a testimonial from officers of the Bank of the United States November 18 1834. At the bottom of that slip Gillmeyer offers a $300.00 reward to anyone who can find the "first fair detection of an error of ONE CENT in the interest calculations." The author's "large" work of 53-pages is <i>Banking Time Tables in twelve series </i>Washington D. C.: 1834. The Gillmeyer family was from Emmitsburg Maryland and a Jacob is listed as having been a Midshipman on Sloop <i>Erie</i>during the War of 1812 and as a teacher at St. Mary's Emmitsburg 1827-1833 and living in Baltimore in 1834. Unless we miscounted the title runs to 213 words! A handsome little book in a appealing binding and scarce. Slight occasional foxing. <b>OCLC </b>locates two copies Univ. Michigan; Univ. Virginia. Autobiographical story of a Confederate soldier from Washington County Tennessee; Civil War experiences include his capture at Kennesaw Mountain in June 1864 his incarceration as a prisoner of war at Camp Douglas Illinois his journey home and after reflecting on his childhood in east Tennessee how he came to join an infantry company as the war began. Yeager 1842-1940 served with the 29th Tennessee Infantry Confederate until his capture; though not included in this autobiography his post-Civil War years were spent first as a lawyer in Tennessee then as a newspaperman and farmer in Johnson County Texas.
