Good. 3 volumes of 4 original cloth good set with minor wear and soil evidence that a bookplate has been removed from each volume otherwise good clean set very rare. The author lived from 1859-1924 and spent almost his entire life in Moscow: he was the state rabbi for Moscow by 1893 and formed a number of Russian Zionist associations to further the cause of Russian Jews. The Bolsheviks had no use for him and after the Revolution he barely escaped arrest after a 1920 Zionist conference in Moscow. Eventually the new government established the Evsektsiia the Jewish Section of the Communist Party but made Yiddish the official language instead of Hebrew against the public objections of Maseh and others. He wrote his memoirs toward the end of his life 1924 in Moscow but they remained unpublished until this edition from 1936. Text in Hebrew. B. Kohen, Hotsa'at "Yalkut hardcover

Good. 8vo 8.75 x 6.5 inches publisher's patterned boards with leather title and front cover labels good with rubbing and light wear to edges joints spine ends contents very good clean and unmarked slightly tanned. Sometimes called the Women's Bible is a Yiddish-language prose work whose structure parallels the weekly Torah portions and Haftarahs used in Jewish prayer services. The book was written by Jacob ben Isaac Ashkenazi 1550–1625 of Janów Lubelski near Lublin Poland and mixes Biblical passages with teachings from Judaism's Oral Torah such as the Talmud's Aggadah and Midrash which are sometimes called "parables allegories short stories anecdotes legends and admonitions" by secular writers. Parts of the Tseno Ureno were translated into German in 1910 by Bertha Pappenheim as Zennah u-Reenah. Only the first part of her translation of the Women's Bible appeared Bereschit corresponding to the Book of Genesis. The translations of the second and third books Schemot and Wajikra have apparently been lost. J. Kauffmann hardcover

1952H36081Mexico City: Farlag Tsvi Kessel 1952. First Printing. Hardcover. Very good/good. Cloth in dust jacket book very good jacket fair to good with general soil edgewear chips and tears. 235 pp. In Yiddish. From an online encyclopedia not wikipedia we found the following information on Schwartz: 1885–1971 Yiddish poet and translator. Born in Petroshun Lithuania he began his literary career translating some of Bialik's poems into Yiddish. In 1906 he emigrated to New York and as soon as he had mastered English translated poems by Shakespeare Milton and Walt Whitman. He participated in the publications of the literary movement Di Yunge but dissociated himself from its rebelliously militant members. In 1918 he settled in Lexington Kentucky where he found rich material which he incorporated in his verse epic Kentoki "Kentucky" 1925 translating it himself into Hebrew 1962. It is generally rated as one of the finest achievements of American Yiddish literature. The hero of this narrative is a Jewish peddler who rises from poverty to affluence in the course of decades of hard work and just dealings with his neighbors and becomes a respected prosperous pillar of Kentucky society. Schwartz's verse autobiography Yunge Yorn "Young Years" 1952 wove a web of enchantment about his native Lithuanian town along the Nieman River and about the Kovno yeshivah where together with traditional studies he became familiar with Bialik's Hebrew Reisen's Yiddish and Herzl's Zionist visions. Yunge Yorn ends with his departure from home for the New World. Because of Schwartz's lifelong preoccupation with translating contemporary Hebrew poets his Yiddish style has a rich Hebraic flavor.
