Joseph Jakob von Plenck's 'Doctrina de morbis veneris' 1779 is the venereology counterpart to his famous 'Doctrina de morbis cutaneis' and one of the earliest systematic Latin handbooks devoted specifically to venereal diseases written from the perspective of an 18th-century Vienna-based clinician. It is important because it applies an Enlightenment-era classificatory and nosological framework to venereal diseases at a time when "morbus gallicus" and related conditions were still conceptually fluid. By systematizing syphilis gonorrhoea and other venereal affections into defined classes and species he helped move venereology from a predominantly empirical-practical art toward a more theoretically ordered branch of special pathology parallel to what he achieved for skin diseases. In the broader history of dermatology the 1779 first edition stands as an early link between cutaneous medicine and venereology in Central Europe foreshadowing the later 19th-century fusion of "Haut- und Geschlechtskrankheiten" as a combined specialty. Joseph Jakob von Plenck 1738/1735-1807 was a Hungarian-born physician who became professor in Vienna and is often named as the founder of Austrian dermatology. Er war einer der gebildetsten Ärzte des 18. Jhdts. und entfaltete eine reiche literarische Tätigkeit auf allen Gebieten der medizinischen Wissenschaften. Sein vorliegendes Lehrbuch durch "einprägsame Kürze und Präzision der Krankenbeschreibungen und der Heilmethoden gekennzeichnet" gehört zu denjenigen frühen Werken die die "Loslösung der Augenheilkunde aus dem Verbund der Chirurgie eingeleitet hatten" und der Opthalmologie damit eine eigene Disziplin eröffneten vgl. A Good still quite serviceable set of an exceptionally uncommon collection of colonial American sermons published in exile during the Revolutionary War.<br /> <br /> A member of the colonial Philadelphia ruling class his father the Colonel Jacob Duché once served as mayor Jacob Duché 1738-1798 had gained prominence as a religious leader for the beauty and eloquence of his preaching serving twice as chaplain to the Continental Congress. However his political views were at odds with the authors of the Declaration of Independence and in 1777 he foolishly wrote to George Washington insisting that he undo the Declaration whether peacefully or by force. For this he and his family were obliged to make a speedy retreat exiling themselves to London where Duché was once again a hit as a religious orator. Perhaps misleadingly in these two volumes he is listed as the "Rector of Christ-Church and St. Peter's in Philadelphia" a position he had to abandon in his exile.
