This is followed by biographical chapters on various northern wrestlers. Thereafter are two chapters are on Bull Baiting and Badgers and Badger Baiting. Both of these sports had been outlawed in the United Kingdom as early as 1835 with the Cruelty to Animals Act. There is a reproduction of a Bewickesque woodcut of badger baiting on p.234.The final short chapter is an account by Thomas de Quincey of a ""Midnight Chase of a bull by Professor Wilson"". unknown

The first edition of this work issued in 1850 contained several samples of genuine California gold ore and is notably scarce. This revised edition was issued without the samples but contains new material on the California gold situation and California coins; Mormon coins; and other West Coast imprints. There are 5 handsome engraved plates at the end of the book showing gold coins from California and the west coast; Mormon coins; gold ingots; mining company issues; coins from Central America; and much more. The second half of the book written by Du Bois is devoted to ancient coins in the U.S. Mint's private collection including coins from the Roman Empire Persia the Byzantine era and more. Some minor discolourations and some marginal chipping and staining not affecting the map altogether a very good copy laid down on original canvas as a scroll on two wooden rods. . Notes: Inset map of the world sits beneath the title in the lower left corner. It is centred on the Americas and charts the course of Wilkes' circumnavigation of the globe in the 1840s. To its right sits an index of counties and towns. Above the title on the left side are a legend and scale. On the right by the mid margin is a table of distances. The oceans are decorated with tall ships and the whole map sits within a decorative floral border. This map marks the dawn of the Manifest Destiny era of American history. Soon after the American victory of Mexico large new states and territories were carved out from the newly acquired land. Here we see the newly formed California and Texas along with the Oregon and Washington territories securing the country's claim to the Pacific coast. With California's gold rush getting into full swing the map accentuates many details of that state's gold region. North-South tensions are revealed in the ambiguity of the central states and territories: Northern interests sought to create a massive Nebraska territory which would have included present-day Kansas; however Southern lawmakers pressed Congress to make two separate territories. However by 1807 in Neue Kritik der Vernunft he preferred to call his own psychology â€œphilosophical anthropologyâ€ and in 1820 under the influence of G. E. Schulze he changed the title of his psychology to â€œpsychic anthropologyâ€. In the second edition of Neue Kritik der Vernunft 1828-31 in which he again used the title of â€œpsychic anthropologyâ€ Fries explained why he had avoided the use of the term â€œpsychologyâ€: â€œAlthough this science is usually called psychology we will deviate from this terminology for several reasons. The word Â«psycheÂ» or soul has been used in philosophy to designat the metaphysical persisting simple and immortal essence of the spirit and its use therefore''implies certain assumptions which we cannot now entertain. We are only concerned with developing a doctrine of the nature of the human soul based upon "inner experienceâ€. Thus we will deal only with inner anthropology. In thus narrowing our scope to the human spirit we arrive at the topic of empirical psychology or psychic anthropology. But our present task differs from empirical psychology which is an experimental physics of inner life eine innere Experimentalphysik which remains forever fragmentary. We will not be satisfied with such a science. We want to achieve a unified theory of inner life a doctrine of inner nature which will provide for the study of our inner psychic nature what 'the philosophy of nature now provides for physics. This part of psychic anthropology we want to call philosophical anthropology From the introduction to Vol. 1 p. 36. â€œThus Fries called his psychology â€œpsychic anthropologyâ€ both to avoid the metaphysical assumptions of the old rational psychology and to indicate his dissatisfaction with the current Â« fragmentary Â» and mechanical empirical psychology. On the first account in rejecting the old metaphysics of the soul Fries accepted Kant's critique of rational psychology; on the second in rejecting the merely empirical status of psychology he disagreed with Kant's evaluation of the limited epistemological possibilities of psychology. Instead he maintained that psychology need not be â€œmerely empiricalâ€ that it can attain the true status of a science and in other words that its phenomena can be rationally organized according to metaphysical criteria. Kant 1786; trans. 1970 had denied this possibility claiming that the metaphysical principles of natural science were not applicable to psychology. With several wood engraving ornaments throughout. 8 432 pp. Second edition of a remarkable Dutch-Malay and French-Malay dictionary partially based on and translated from William Marsdens famous English-Malay dictionary and is otherwise compiled by Cornelis Pieter Jacob Elout. The Malay words are given in both Jawi script and phonetic transcription in italics the Dutch and French words are given in roman script. 1825 as Maleisch Nederduitsch en Fransch woordenboek Dictionnaire Malai Hollandais et Français also by Johannes Enschedé and sons. Elout based his work on the foundational English-Malay dictionary of the British linguist William Marsden 1754-1836 whose pioneering work on the Malay language was an essential tool for the British East India Company in the Malay Archipelago. At the time of publication both Dutch and French were official languages in the Netherlands thus explaining the work being bilingual and having both a Dutch and a French title page.Marsden embarked upon a remarkable journey of scholarship and service that began at Trinity College Dublin. At the tender age of sixteen he joined the British East India Company and in 1771 he was posted to Sumatra. There he not only advanced through the ranks but also mastered the Malay language an achievement that would underpin much of his later work. Returning to England in 1779 Marsden earned a law degree from Oxford and in 1783 published his landmark History of Sumatra which earned him election to the Royal Society. Later he served as secretary to the Admiralty though he ultimately retired in 1807 to devote himself to scholarly pursuits.Cornelis Pieter Jacob Elout 1795-1843 further advanced the Malay lexicography. Born in Haarlem Elout initially prepared for a civilian career yet his life took a decisive turn when he accompanied his father to Java in 1814. There he distinguished himself both militarily and administratively. His involvement in quelling uprisings in Cheribon and Palembang earned him the Military William Order the oldest and hightest honour of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and he played a decisive role in consolidating Dutch authority over Sumatra and other islands in the region. Under the guidance of Professor Reinwardt he attained a profound command of High Malay.
