Lucifer's rebellion is representated as a psychological aberration within the first two principles while the fall of humankind is represented as a physiological and alchemical allegory that takes place initially inside an androgynous Adam. The front outer wrap is detached and a little edge chipped; rear wrap missing paper spine perished. Light occasional foxing on a few pages good only. The author was born enslaved near Columbia South Carolina in 1849 and grew up on the Singleton Plantation. During the Civil War Stroyer was forced by the Confederacy to shore up defenses along the South Carolina coast and was injured by Union forces in 1864 near Fort Sumter. After the War Stroyer received education in the South and moved north to Worcester Massachusetts in 1870. This narrative was first published in 1879 while he was a preacher at the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Salem Massachusetts. Stroyer provides vivid descriptions of the culture and treatment of the enslaved during his captivity in South Carolina. Salem Observer Book and Job Print unknown

The accompanying text guides the reader through these twists and turns. Original burnt orange illustrated card wrappers printed in green gold and terracotta and lettered in black. A superbly preserved example of this fragile production all but pristine rare with Worldcat Discovery listing only one copy and LHD none. For more than 700 years book designers have been pushing back the boundaries of the two-dimensional page adding flaps and rotating parts to enhance the text most often in scientific literature. But only in the nineteenth century did movable flaps became a regular feature in children’s books. In the Netherlands ‘De nieuwe rijschool’ The new riding school published in 1856 was the first movable children’s book which reached their peak in the 1870s and 1880s. Gerardus Theodorus Bom 1814-1884 was a Dutch publisher of books in Amsterdam issuing such titles as Kindervreugd 1864 Robinson Crusoë c.1865 and Kunstenmakers at work 1875. Andriessen's first books were published under the pseudonym Pieter Jacobsz. Under his own name he wrote a series of romantic stories for young people mainly derived from Dutch national history. N. B.
