Dieses Werk Graf Lazare Nicolas Marguerite Carnot 1753-1823 ist eine flammende Verteidigungsschrift gegen die Anklage des Politikers und Schriftstellers Jacques-Charles Bailleul 1762-1843. Dieser behauptete Carnot wäre am Staatsstreich des 18 Fructidor V. beteiligt gewesen. Tatsächlich war Carnot daran nicht beteiligt. Er hatte sich der drohenden Verhaftung aber durch Flucht in die Schweiz entzogen. Diese Schrift ist im Frühling 1799 verfaßt. Wenige Monate später - nach dem Staatsstreich Napoleon Bonapartes vom 18. Brumaire VIII 9. November 1799 - konnte Carnot nach Frankreich zurückkehren und wurde zum Kriegsminister ernannt. Während der Herrschaft der Hundert Tage Napoléons I. 1815 wurde er zum Innenminister ernannt. Schließlich wurde er in der Zeit der Restauration des Königsmordes angeklagt und musste nach Preußen flüchten wo er 1823 verstarb. 1889 wurden seine Gebeine nach Paris überführt und im Pantheon beigesetzt. o.
