Last 4 pages contain sheet music. Title translates as: “Haggadah or Ceremonies for the First Two Nights of Passover according to the Rites of the German and Portuguese Israelites.†<br> Written by L. Blum revised and corrected by Lazare Wogue 1817–1897. Wogue was a “French rabbi scholar and journalist born in Fontainebleau and ordained in 1843 at the École Centrale Rabbinique in Metz. In 1851 he began to teach German and theology there in 1859 it became the Séminaire Israélite de France and was transferred to Paris retaining his two chairs until his retirement in 1894. From 1868 Wogue was also director of the talmud torah of the Séminaire Israélite. The most important of his many scholarly works is a translation of the Pentateuch with commentaries 1860–69 which is the one used in the Bible du Rabbinat edited by Z. Kahn. <br> Among his other publications are Le Rabbinat Français au XIXe siècle 1843 Le Guide du Croyant Israélite 1857 18982 Histoire de la Bible et de l'Exégèse biblique jusqu'à nos jours 1881 a French translation 1882 of the first two volumes of Geschichte der Juden by H. Graetz Esquisse d'une théologie juive 1887 and La Prédication Israélite en France 1890. He also translated various Hebrew works. <br> Among the manuscripts he left is a tract on theology. A prolific writer Wogue wrote many articles which were published in such Jewish periodicals as La Paix and l'Union Israélite. This volume is book five in his extensive compendium of medicine with sections on physiology pathology semiotics preservation of health and therapeutics. Subjects dealt with include cancer haemorrhaging the amount of food required by a healthy individual the diagnostic significance of bloodshot eyes and the medical properties of various fruits nuts and vegetables. The complete medical works of Lazare Rivière 1589-1655 professor at Montpellier consists of the Institutiones medicae together with the Praxeos medicae and an additional 17 parts on the head the sense organs the teeth the thorax and abdomen the joints womens illnesses and fevers. Also included are 400 observations by the author approximately 250 communicated to him by fellow physicians and finally the Arcana a collection of secrets giving the chemical formulae for a large number of preparations together with their medicinal properties. At the end separately paginated is added a treatise on the symptoms cause and cure of respiratory problems by Fabrizio Bartoletti 1586-1630. Rivière was the first to introduce the therapy of using metallic compounds internally known as the spagiric or paracelsian-specific method and the first to note aortic constriction. An uncommon Handy Brothers Music Co. publication issued late in the career of W. C. Handy 1873–1958. The song is credited to Lazarus A. Aaronson a little-documented composer whose work here was published in homage to Handy. The present copy bears Handy’s contemporary inscription: “To Miss Sybil Gregory — W. C. Handy — 6-16-1951.â€<br /> <br /> Little information survives regarding Gregory suggesting a personal acquaintance or admirer within Handy’s musical circle. Signed publications from the Handy Brothers imprint are uncommon and provide a tangible association with one of the most influential figures in the history of American blues.
