1880y0672Venice: Armenian Monastery of S. Lazarus 1880. Fifth or so edition of this small but important booklet introducing Ottoman Armenian folklore to the English world. Includes two pages showing the Armenian alphabet proverbs in Armenian text with English translation below. The Monastery of Saint Lazarus was an important center of Armenian culture & scholarship in the nineteenth century and remains active today. First published in 1844 with 180 proverbs and reprinted in 1861 and 1868 this 1880 edition has 192 proverbs - though many of those newly added do seem to correspond remarkably with vernacular English proverbs. There was also a printing in 1873. Delicate paperback showing some wear mended tears to cover & first leaf adhesive residue on front cover light creasing staple rust pages tanned minor loss to lower corner of first leaf perforated letters to first leaf no other markings noted. 37 pages. .
