1813022710Andover: Flagg & Gould. One of the earliest American publications using a Hebrew font. Original boards. First Edition. Flagg and Gould the press of Andover Theological Seminary acquired fonts in Greek and Hebrew type and because nobody else knew how to set them Stuart did it himself. Scott Paradise noted in his History of Printing in Andover that this book was the first publication using a Hebrew font to be published in America but actually several other such publications preceded it. With his work in Hebrew grammar and criticism Stuart was called the leader of Hebrew scholarship in America Americas most competent philologist and grammarian the undisputed leader in American exegetical science and one of the 19th-centurys most notable American scholars. Stuart noted that he printed only 120 copies of this book so it is extremely rare. Stuarts biographer John H. Giltner wrote that this book was the first American attempt to publish anything like a comprehensive exposition of the character and usage of the Hebrew language and a landmark in the history of American Hebrew studies. . Tönnis und eigenhändig "Herrn Prof. Dr. Bushe zugeeignet von Herma Tönnis". First German Edition! Moses Allen Starr's "Brain surgery" was the first American book on neurosurgery published the same year as Macewen's pioneering neurosurgical classic. Moses Allen Starr 1854-1932 'Professor of Neurology in the College pf Physician and Surgeons at Columbia University New York City' "had plans for a career in classical culture when he graduated from Princeton and embarked for Germany to study Greek and Roman history. In Berlin however several visits to Helmholtz's laboratory revived a latent interest in natural science. He returned to his native New York graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons P&S Columbia University did a residency at Bellevue Hospital then returned to Europe to work at Heidelberg Vienna and Paris. On return to New York he set up a laboratory in his home and in 1884 published an essay on the sensory tracts of the central nervous system elucidating some of the then-current questions of myelination. Starr's regard as an American pioneer in the field of cerebral localization stemmed from his participation in a symposium on that subject with the famous English neurologist David Ferrier and neurosurgeon Victor Horsley who were delegates to the 1888 Congress of American Physicians and Surgeons in Washington D.C. He became professor of nervous diseases at the Montreal Neurological Institute. During neurosurgical operations they electrically stimulated the surface of the exposed unanesthetized brains of patients who were talking. On-going speech was blocked by excitation of the parietal-temporal area the inferior frontal area and the supplemental motor area of the left hemisphere Penfield & Roberts 1959. Those experimental protocols were a continuation of Penfield's long quest to add to the knowledge of body representations on the neocortex." H.W. Magoun & L. All of the editions included here contain the first German translations of their respective parts of the text.

Maimonides' intention with this work was to reconcile Aristotelian thought and logic with traditional Rabbinical Jewish theology. Originally written circa 1190 in Judeo-Arabic as Dalalat al-Ha'irin these writings takes the form of a lengthy three-part letter to his student Rabbi Joseph ben Judah of Ceuta and are seen as the main source for understanding Maimonides' philosophic view rather than his strictly being his views on Jewish law. It is the most known of his works in the non-Jewish world. The work's first translation into Hebrew was in 1204 by Rabbi Samuel ben Judah ibn Tibbon c.1150 - c.1230 a contemporary of Maimonides.

Content:

Moreh li-Tsedakah. However for this second edition of that translation it is interesting to note that the text of the German is printed in Hebrew script. Content finely printed in double and single-column layouts with commentary printed in Rashi script. Divided in 76 chapters this part of the work contains discussions of an understanding and definition of the nature of God and divine anthropomorphism in the Hebrew bible including a detailed analysis of the Biblical Hebrew of the text to these ends. The final three pages included here contain and index in both Hebrew and German.

BOUND WITH
More Nebochim. Wegweiser für Berirrte SECOND PART. 1864.
