Traditionally attributed to Aristeas a HellenisticJewish official the letter aims to explain how and why the translation was undertaken under the patronage of the Ptolemaic king Ptolemy II Philadelphus.

The letter begins with Aristeas addressing his friend Philocrates describing his journey from Egypt to Jerusalem where he seeks the favor of the Jewish high priest Eleazar. He recounts the relaxed attitude of the Jewish community their dedication to their religious customs and their desire to have their Scriptures translated for Greek-speaking Jews Abroad.
Aristeas details the king's admiration for Jewish Law and his decree to have the Scriptures translated into Greek involving a large scholarly committee of Jewish elders and Greek translators. The process emphasizes the reverence and carefulness involved in the translation portraying it as a divine and meticulous effort. The letter also highlights the mutual respect between Greeks and Jews as well as the importance of the Septuagint in facilitating understanding between different cultures.

The narrative concludes with Aristeas expressing hope for the success of the translation and the benefits it will bring while emphasizing the divine blessing upon the project.

The Greek text is that of H. St. J. Thackeray and the brief critical notes that accompany it are by Professor Hadas.

Insurance & handling is included free.
