18326356Montreal: 14 December 1832. Very Good/A note of accounts between two brothers both powerful businessmen in the burgeoning city of Montreal. The document reads in part: "Alexander Hart in account current with Moses Hart. " The figures list balances payments compensations charges including for "1/3 burial wall" and totals. Moses Hart's autograph appears next to the total. The docket is in the hand of Alexander Hart. The Hart family was a major force in Montreal trade and commerce between the 18th and 19th centuries. 2 leaves 163 x 200 mm; first page blank. Docket on last page. Signature of the late Leon J. Leibreich the influential Professor of Theology at Hebrew Union College who has a prize for liturgy endowed in his name on title page. Work was originally written in Arabic by Judah ben David Hayyuj. This book includes both the Hebrew translation by Moses Gikitilia of Cordova and the English translation by John W. Nutt. Minor age wear to exterior. Binding has been expertly reinforced with green binder's tape along front endpapers. Book is in very good condition. Bohn acquired the remainders from his father in 1831 and released them under his own name soon after.<br /><br />Rebound in brown cloth with new endpapers a few signatures springing loose. He enjoyed a great reputation for his outline plates which are distinguished for the purity and correctness of the drawing. Among his other works are <i>A Collection of Vases</i> 1814 <i>Picturesque Views of Ramsgate</i> 1817 <i>Vases from the Collection of Sir Henry Englefield</i> 1819 <i>Sketches of Shipping</i> 1824 <i>Marine Sketch Book</i> 1826 etc.<br /><br />This collection was also issued under the imprint of at least two other London publishers in 1823 McLean and Miller.<br /><br />Leather spine solid paper boards soiled bookplate of Walter and Edith Wiggin on front endpaper hinges repaired all 29 plates present but as often with varying degrees of foxing and spotting. Hard to find in any kind of acceptable condition as the copies of this book did not survive well. Actually though not particularly good this is better than often seen. Benjamin West was a British-American artist who painted famous historical scenes such as The Death of Nelson the Treaty of Paris and Benjamin Franklin Drawing Electricity from the Sky. This is a volume of a gallery of pictures by Benjamin West which have been engraved by Henry Moses. With seventeen plates.Collated complete. Undated dated from Jisc. In full cloth binding. Externally worn. Both boards are detached and the spine is missing. The boards remain smart. Previous owner inscription to the front free endpaper dated 1845. A polemic addressing some of the pitfalls of a democratic republic foretelling the rise of a demagogue including the need for truthful information to be imparted to an informed public and the "baneful tendency of favoritism in a free republic." A polemic in the style of Matthew Carey but with some interesting anti-semitic content in its historical considerations: a diatribe against Absalom "Moses reviled as a monarchist" "The ingratitude of the Hebrew Republic toward the family of Gideon" "Sudden transitions from Republicanism to Monarchy in the instances of the ancient Hebrews and modern Britons" -- some of the chapter headers. Ezra Sampson a Congregational minister was born at Middleborough Mass. Feb. 12 1749. He graduated at Yale College 1773 and became pastor of the Congregational Church at Plympton Mass. Feb. 1775. He also officiated as chaplain in the Revolutionary army and was settled at Hudson N.Y. by 1796. While there he became associated with Rev. Harry Crosswell in the editorship of The Balance one of the first literary journals in the United States 1801-4. He edited for a year 1804-5 the Connecticut Courant and became judge of Columbia County in 1814. He died in New York City Dec. 12 1823. Shaw & Shoemaker 3045.
