Early annotations and signatures to title page interior otherwise clean. $650. Only edition. "Moses Thacher sometimes spelled Thatcher charged Pond with slander. Pond pleaded not guilty and alleged truth as a defense. The jury found for the plaintiff and awarded $5.00 in damages and $1.25 in costs" Cohen. After the trial Thacher left New England and served as pastor in Wysox Pennsylvania and in Courtland and Cayuga Counties in New York. The trials attracted a fair amount of attention; according to Cohen it was discussed in three pamphlets. All are scarce. A wealth of detail. Moses Margoliouth 1820-1881 was a Polish-born British scholar a Jewish convert to Christianity and an Anglican minister. He studied at Trinity College Dublin and at the Hebrew College London. He was the author of The History of the Jews in Great Britain 1851. From the collection of John Wilson c. 1826-1900 pioneer merchant and book collector of Portland Oregon. One of the first books published at Andover Theological Seminary and for more than thirty years the standard among theological institutions. Paradise A history of printing in Andover. Prior to his joining Andover as professor of sacred literature Stuart had no acquaintance with Hebrew. He immediately began intensive study of the language and became one of the few native-born Americans to know enough to teach it. Lack of funding compelled Stuart to produce his own grammar for the benefit of his students which was first circulated in manuscript then printed in 1813 and expanded in 1821. He had to import Hebrew type and as local printers couldn't properly set it did much of the setting himself DAB. While other grammars of Hebrew had been printed in America as accompaniments to lexicographical works this is one of the earliest if not the first separately produced grammar of Hebrew in the States. Flagg and Gould the press of Andover Theological Seminary acquired fonts in Greek and Hebrew type and because nobody else knew how to set them Stuart did it himself. Scott Paradise noted in his History of Printing in Andover that this book was the first publication using a Hebrew font to be published in America but actually several other such publications preceded it. With his work in Hebrew grammar and criticism Stuart was called the leader of Hebrew scholarship in America Americas most competent philologist and grammarian the undisputed leader in American exegetical science and one of the 19th-centurys most notable American scholars. Stuart noted that he printed only 120 copies of this book so it is extremely rare. Stuarts biographer John H. Giltner wrote that this book was the first American attempt to publish anything like a comprehensive exposition of the character and usage of the Hebrew language and a landmark in the history of American Hebrew studies. .
