19123108<p>A nice copy of the 1912 seventh edition of Stainton Moses' well known book a foundational text in the Spiritualist movement. Moses was an English spiritualist and clergyman who claimed a number of clairvoyant and psychical experiences. He was best known for his 'automatic scripts' supposedly received via direct communication from a band of spirits. In very nice condition. Pages are all intact and clean. A contemporary neat inscription and a small model sticker of previous owner on front pasteboard/FEP. No notes or underlining or anything similar on pages. Tanning on FEPs. Overall though pages are bright and clean with just normal age wear. One page remains uncut 142-143 and we haven't attempted to cut it open though this seems completely achievable. Corrections page is present. Binding is very good. Front board at pastedown has a slight 'lift' from text block but no structural impact. Blue boards have retained their colour nicely and are generally very good: half a mug or cup mark visible on front see photos and a little disruption to small part of spine but no structural damage. Very slight superficial relaxing of connection to spine around p 145 but this has no bearing on actual bond of pages and is superficial only see photo. Boards are clean and very tidy with gilt writing on spine very bright. Some casual shelf wear at corners etc. A very nice clean copy. 19083100<p>A very nice copy -with interesting extra features - of the 1908 edition Stainton Moses' foundational text of Spiritualism. The book argues that communication with the dead is a verifiable scientific phenomenon and details how individual spirits prove their unique earthly identities from beyond the grave. This is a very good copy. Pages are clean and clear with just some tanning on initial pages and FEPs. Two interesting previous owners: first Sir Charles Marston who has inscribed his name on front FEP and a 1908 date. His and his wife Louise's art deco bookplate is on front pastedown. Marston was a well known businessman and supporter of archaeological digs including those of Max Mallowan Agatha Christie's husband. Secondly parasychologust. Alan Gauld whose small ownership sticker is on front pastedown see photos. Some correspondence to Gauld is also included with this copy as well as a pamphlet of a speech by well known psychic researcher Leslie Price inscribed to Gauld. Front FEP of the book has a small corner missing see photos. Binding is excellent and maroon boards are really lovely with gilt lettering outstanding and with very little wear at all. Small scratch bottom left near spine.</p><p>This is one of the most hilarious books I've ever read while also being an insightful glimpse into the life of a philosopher. In it Maimon describes his humble roots in a deeply impoverished rural Jewish community in Eastern Europe his enlightenment and then his strange and grueling journey to find others as enlightened as he thought himself to be. Hungry for anything even faintly resembling wisdom Maimon oscillates between the mystical and the skeptical with the skeptical side gaining influence as the book progresses. Eventually in his travels he arrives in Germany and surrounds himself with the urbane intellectuals he'd always hoped to join but never quite feels at home. By the end of the book we see Maimon sinking into depression and drink having chosen his career and status over a path with more heart regretting his decision to leave his family and roots behind</p><p>Maimon is a joy to read at least in his autobiography- his philosophical writings can be very abstruse. He's extremely neurotic but also acutely self-aware and honest never losing sight of a faint glimmer of hope in spite of all his tribulations.
