Joints and endpapers in very good condition. Ink notations in a later hand on the history of this edition to front flyleaf. Pages slightly browned due to age occasional small stains. Top edge a little dusty small stain to fore edge and lower edge.</p><p><strong>Notes:</strong> Around 1669 Amelot de La Houssaye 1634–1706 was appointed legation secretary to the French ambassador in Venice. From this period he drew the information for his "Histoire du gouvernement de Venise" an unsparing description of the political constitution of the city-state published in Paris in 1676. After the publication the outraged protests of the Venetian ambassador led to La Houssaye being imprisoned in the Bastille. The scandal surrounding La Houssaye helped the work to become very popular so that he published a second edition with additions in 1677. The 'Supplément à l'histoire du gouvernement de Venise' provoked further protests from Venice so that the edition was finally banned in France. But even this ban only led to a greater demand for the book so that it was subsequently reprinted in secret. The note "Sur la Copie" on the title page but also the comparison of the types of printing used suggests that the present edition was not printed by Léonard in Paris.</p> Frédéric Léonard hardcover

These series of treaties signed in the Dutch city of Nijmegen between August 1678 and December 1679 ended various interconnected wars among France the Dutch Republic Spain Brandenburg Sweden Denmark the Prince-Bishopric of Münster and the Holy Roman Empire. Text in French. Second edition. Scarce. In a full vellum binding with title inked on the spine. Externally sound with marks to boards. Internally firmly bound. pages are remarkably bright and clean for their age with the few handling marks or small spots confined to the endpapers. Title page with sphere. Contemporary full marbled brown sheep binding. Spine with raised bands decorated. Brown sheep title-label. Slight lack at foot. One corner slightly bumped. Good copy perfectly fresh. In his memoirs written in Holland where he found refuge Wicquefort diplomat and intellectual takes up his pen to defend himself against accusations of high treason which earned him a sentence of life imprisonment. Famous diplomat first in the service of Mazarin then imprisoned for a writing on the relations of young Louis XIV with Mazarin's niece he finds refuge in Holland where he will inform France of the actions of foreign diplomats and ambassadors. In 1675 the Williamson Affair emerges: Wicquefort is accused of high treason after having sold secret dispatches to the ambassador of the English Crown Sir Williamson. He is arrested on March 25th and taken to prison. In 1676 he is condemned to life imprisonment after a resounding trial and to the confiscation of his goods. It is during his stay in prison that he writes these memoirs on diplomats ministers ambassadors and law in Europe. Wicquefort will manage to escape from prison in 1679. Chez Frédéric Léonard à Paris 1677 7.50 x 13.80 cm relié Edition with some parts in first edition rare much preferable to the 1676 original which contains only the first part; this one is therefore considerably expanded with major pieces. A frontispiece representing Saint Mark's Square in Venice. The 1677 edition contains 3 titles for each part plus an added title summarizing the whole; one will easily notice that these three parts are very rarely found together in libraries see Oxford Leeds. and that they most often appear separately. There were undoubtedly several editions at this date of 1677 of which only this one contains the three parts. Moreover this edition with the sphere would suggest that it was printed elsewhere; the third part bears Ratisbon as place of edition and Jean Aubry as publisher. This part contains the Harangue of Louis Helian Ambassador of France under Louis XII. Contemporary full glazed brown calf binding. Spine with raised bands unlettered decorated with blind roulettes on the headcaps and raised bands. Blind fillets on the boards. Good copy. More than a history of Venice this is a critical study of its institutions and laws. The book was very poorly received in Venice where it was burned diplomatic relations with France became embittered Amelot de la Houssaye was embassy secretary in Venice and the king of France was more or less forced to deliver the author to the Bastille for six days to satisfy Venice. The supplement studies and recounts the disputes that the Republic had with Pope Paul V. The third part of the book is a translation of a book by Fra Paolo. The Harangue of Louis Hélian was pronounced in 1510 before Emperor Maximilian it very sharply accuses the republic of Venice of numerous evils. Chez Frédéric Léonard hardcover

A scarce and early collection of works discussing political issues surrounding restoration France and King Louis XIV. Written in French Written while the author was imprisoned the collection contains both parts one and two of L'Ambassadeur et ses Fonctions Reflaxions sur Les Memoires Pour Les Ambassadeurs et Rosponse Au Ministre Prisonnier and Discours Historique de L'election de L'Empereur et des Electeurs de L'Empire. Featuring illuminated capitals. Wicqufort was an intelligencer gazetteer and a diplomat of the second order who is remembered more for what he wrote than for his other accomplishments. Born in Holland Wicquefort nevertheless spent most of his diplomatic career in Paris. Here he served as resident of the Elector of Brandenburg-Prussia from 1626 until 1658 when having fallen foul of Mazarin he was first briefly imprisoned in the Bastille and then expelled. Invited to The Hague by John de Witt the Grand Pensionary of Holland Wicquefort was employed as a translator for the States General but chiefly as the Grand Pensionary's special secretary for French correspondence. In 1675 Wicquefort who had in the previous year also secured the appointment of resident in Holland of the Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle was accused by his enemies of selling state secrets. He was tried by the Court of Holland and despite his plea of diplomatic immunity imprisoned for life on the grounds that he remained a Dutch national in the paid service of its government to which he had taken an oath of secrecy. Sent like Grotius before him to the prison of Loevestein though he escaped to Celle in 1679 he devoted his time to furious writing. First published in the year before he died and subsequently reissued many times this became the most highly regarded manual of diplomacy of the eighteenth century. Disbound although with original rear board and backstrip. Generally firmly bound to the text block edge although with title page absent and the last few leaves detached yet present. In 1800's quarter leather binding with marbled boards and title label with gilt compartments to spine. The spine is worn at the joints particularly at the front some splitting starting at the top and with wear at the top spine end with some fraying. There is wear to edges and corners. The binding is currently sound. Page edges yellowed. Armorial bookplate of Edward Cheney 1803-1884 the art collector and water colour painter of Badger Hall Shropshire to front pastedown. Cheney's note of purchase in Rome in 1833 on fep. Pagination: 14164201662. With frontispiece and vignette to title for the Second Part of the works. Each work has its own title page ad lectorem etc. Pagination restarts with the Third Part. Contents overall very clean and in good to very good condition. There is a mispagination - 16-3-18. There is darkening in the gutter at pp 88/89; some brown toning to some leaves eg 121/2 127/8 and 161/2; and occasional darkening at the top page edge probably from soot. Page marker present. Those are followed by the 1668 version of The Mistress Pindarique Odes The Troubles of David and a series of miscellaneous writings. Finally are The Table and Cutter of Coleman-Street. The initial title page and frontis are somewhat toned as is the Cutter of Coleman-Street. The remainder of the text block is fairly fresh with very light widely scattered foxing.
