2009673New York: Alfred A. Knopf 2009. First edition. Hardcover. As new/As new. As New/As New first edition first printing. Physician Abraham Verghese had already proven he could write with his two best-selling memoirs "My Own Country" and "The Tennis Partner" when this his first novel was published in 2009. Yet anyone who has read either of those two books will be able to recognize autobiographical elements in "Cutting for Stone" even though it is still a work of pure fiction. Verghese was born and raised in Ethiopia. So are the protagonists of this book. Verghese is the son of Indian Orthodox Christians who moved to Ethiopia from the Indian state of Kerala. The twin brothers "Cutting for Stone" centers around are.well it's complicated a complication that informs the backstory and the ending of the book. But both become doctors like Verghese though in their cases they become surgeons just as passionate about their work as Verghese who is a professor of medicine at Stanford University. The plot follows the two orphaned brothers Marion and Shiva Stone as they grow up in a Indian Orthodox Christian missionary hospital where their parents worked during the political turmoil in Ethiopia before and after its revolution in the 1970s before it shifts to the U.S. after they emigrate. The story interweaves the lives and relationships of the brothers including their relationship with each other with the story slightly adjusted chronologically of Ethiopia itself during these years. It is also full of medical detail.perhaps some critics said when it was published too much so. Critic Erica Wagner wrote in the "New York Times" that those with weaker stomachs may want to beware and that "One would I suppose be ill advised to use this novel as a textbook for liver transplantation or bowel surgery but it might almost be possible." Yet in a way the accretion of medical detail is how Verghese demonstrates both his own and his characters' passion and empathy. Wagner wrote "Verghese's weakness is the weakness of a writer with too much heart." Meanwhile in "The Guardian" critic Aida Edemariam an Ethiopian-Canadian who grew up in Addis Ababa wrote this in the context of all the details Verghese accrued: "Verghese's achievement is to make the reader feel there really is something at stake-birth love death war loyalty. You conserve pages because you don't want it to end." Overall reviews were quite good though not perfect. Good enough though to keep "Cutting for Stone" on the "New York Times" bestseller list for two years.<br /> Signed first edition first printing. Signed by the author on the title page crossing through his printed name. An apparently unread copy. Quarter-bound in black cloth over orange paper-covered boards with bright silver lettering to the spine and the author's silver monogram stamped on the front board. Traditional Knopf colophon at the base of the spine. Binding tight and square with no visible wear. Text block rough-cut at the fore-edge and smooth-cut at the top and bottom edges as issued. A few tiny marks on the copyright page appear to be minor printing artifacts rather than later soiling. Interior otherwise immaculate with no ownership marks or other defects noted. Dust jacket likewise very fine with raised black lettering on the front panel and spine. A particularly well-preserved example. Alfred A. Knopf hardcover
