Notes: Abraham Cowley 1618 â€“ 1667 was one of the leading English poets of the 17th century. In his early years he was best known as a dramatist and satirist writing poetry of a â€œfanciful and decorousâ€ nature Britannica publishing his first collection at the age of 15. He came to be recognized as a contemporary to John Milton and his four books on the biblical kings broke new ground for the epic preparing the way for Miltonâ€™s Paradise Lost. One of his most noted poems is The Mistress included in the present volume which he wrote during the 12 years he spent as secretary to Queen Henrietta Maria of France after being exiled for refusing to sign the Solemn League and Covenant of 1644 at the start of the first English Civil War. In The Mistress Cowley â€œexaggerated John Donneâ€™s â€˜metaphysical witâ€™â€”jarring the readerâ€™s sensibilities by unexpectedly comparing quite different thingsâ€ Britannica. The poems and essays in The Works of Abraham Cowley greatly impacted 17th century poetry with 14 printings of the folio between 1668 and 1721. Cowley was highly praised because of his inclusion of classical formal elements in his poetry that influenced the style of Romantic poets. Cowley was notably buried in Westminster Abbey beside the ashes of Chaucer and Spenser. By their passionate denunciation of the horrors of war Romeyn de Hooghe's illustrations stand comparison with Goya's Desastres de la Guerra. Thieme & Becker calls the artist "the most important and fertile master of the second half of the 17th century in Holland". And Furstenberg judged the present print-series "One of the few and too-little known masterpieces of the period" The Book Collector 1960 p. 432.'The text includes a detailed account of the cruelties committed by the French army of Louis XIV in the Dutch villages of Bodegraven and Swammerdam. The work was published anonymously because the author Abraham de Wicqefort 1598-1682 a diplomat and politician was well-known in Paris and at the French court. He also wrote an excellent manual for ambassadors L'Ambassadeur ses fonctions published in The Hague in 1682. The present work became popular in The Netherlands and was several times republished in Dutch with the plates reduced.With a manuscript note on the recto of the final flyleaf. Slightly foxed throughout the two double-page plates loose.
