Abraham Thornton a bricklayer "was accused of rape and murder after attending a dance where he became intimate with a gardener's daughter named Mary Ashford. They left the dance together and her body was found the next morning in a deep pool of water near a local footpath. Thornton was tried at the Warwick assizes on 8 August 1817. Since the marks on Mary's body were not necessarily inconsistent with Thornton's claim that she had consented to sexual intercourse and since the times on the morning in question when Thornton was seen walking home to Bromwich suggested he could not have been with her when she met her death the jury found him not guilty. The case aroused much interest and reminded people of a similar murder of a local woman a year earlier. Many were convinced of Thornton's guilt and he was assailed in local and London newspapers. A group collected around the Birmingham solicitor William Bedford invoked the old legal process of 'appeal of murder' by which a person acquitted of murder could be tried again for the same offense. This process was generally regarded as obsolet. unknown books

Abraham Thornton a bricklayer was accused of the rape and murder of Mary Ashford when she was found dead the morning after a dance where the two had been seen together. Thornton admitted that the two had been consensually intimate but denied the charges of rape and murder. Eyewitness accounts backed up his story and in the absence of other evidence he was acquitted of both charges. Public outcry around his acquittal led to Mary's brother William invoking an "appeal of murder." This uncommon legal practice allowed a retrial of a defendant acquitted for murder but crucially gave the defendant the right to trial by battle. Thornton invoked that right and was released after William Ashford declined the challenge. The case resulted in the abolition of appeals by murder and thus the end of trial by battle. Despite his protestations of innocence the public was thoroughly convinced of his guilt. Unable to lead a normal life Thornton moved to the United States and settled in Baltimore Maryland. 180427999London 1804. Hand-coloured and colour-printed aquatint with stipple and line engraving by Elmes. Paper watermarked 1804. The most strikingly beautiful flower plates ever to be printed in England.<br/> <br/>"The Persian Cyclamen Cyclamen persicum Miller parent of the florist's cyclamen. is a native of the countries and islands at the eastern end of the Mediterranean but not of Persia itself. It is the largest flowered of an attractive genus of small plants much grown in modern times by connoisseurs. The Persian Cyclamen was not the first of its kind to become known in western Europe. Cyclamen europeaum the `Bleeding Nun' as it was called was thought to be dangerous to pregnant women: any unfortunate lady in this condition who stepped over it might immediately miscarry. John Gerrard the Elizabethan herbalist believed this implicitly and describes how he fenced his plants around with sticks with others laid across them `lest any woman should by lamentable experiment find my words to be true by stepping over the same.' When the baby was nearing full term and delivery was to be encouraged wearing of the disc-like tuber `hanged about' the expectant mothers had a salutary effect and Gerrard told his wife to use it when attending confinements. Its use by midwifes dates back to the days of the Greeks." Ronald King. The Temple of Flora by Robert Thornton. 1981 p. 52. Thornton's Temple of Flora is the greatest English colour-plate flower book. ".Thornton inherited a competent fortune and trained as a doctor. He appears to have had considerable success in practice and was appointed both physician to the Marylebone Dispensary and lecturer in medical botany at Guy's and St. Thomas's hospitals. But quite early in his career he embarked on his. great work. What Redouté produced under the patronage of L'Héritier Marie Antoinette the Empress Josephine Charles X and the Duchesse de Berry Thornton set out to do alone. Numerous important artists were engaged. twenty-eight paintings of flowers commissioned from Abraham Pether known as `Moonlight Pether' Philip Reinagle . Sydenham Edwards and Peter Henderson. The result. involved Thornton in desperate financial straits. In an attempt to extricate himself he organized the Royal Botanic Lottery under the patronage of the Prince Regent. it is easy to raise one's eyebrows at Thornton's unworldly and injudicious approach to publishing. But he produced. one of the loveliest books in the world" Alan Thomas Great Books and Book Collecting pp.142-144. Third state of three of this plate from the Temple of Flora. `In the first state the top the castle is indistinct and has no pinnacles on the towers and this is the first feature to inspect. The hillside is pure aquatint; the shading behind the cyclamen flowers is lightly cross-hatched while the tree trunk to the right has only a few lines on it. In the second state the castle is more prominent and five distinct sharp pinnacles have been added while many extra etched lines are to be seen - notably behind the cyclamen flowers; on the tree trunk; and under the cyclamen leaves on the left which themselves stand out more sharply. The principal change in the third state is the addition of the aquatint to the sky on the left so that only a streak of light remains above the mountains while in the earlier states the light reached the top corner. The leaves of the cyclamen now have. light and dark patches the coarse-grained aquatint has been added to the middle distance. Much additional aquatinting has been applied to other parts of the plate. The most easily-noticed difference however are the changes in the castle between states one and two and in the sky between states two three." Handasyde Buchanan. Thornton's Temple of Flora 1951 p.15. 1872003726Privately printed. HAYWARD Abraham. Lady Palmerston. A Biographical Sketch. A signed presentation copy with autograph correspondence of Viscountess Palmerston and Lord Palmerston bound in. London reprinted by permission from The Times of September 15 1869; dated June 1872. Slim 8vo 21 pp. Contemporary full green morocco boards with dense gilt fillet borders and elaborate gilt corner and frame tooling upper cover lettered in gilt; spine gilt ruled. Rubbing to extremities minor wear at corners but a handsome and well-preserved presentation binding. Internally clean with manuscript material neatly bound in at the front. Very good. Presentation copy inscribed by the author to Alfred Montgomery with the inscription leaf bound in at the front: "Alfred Montgomery Esq. with best regards A.H." Bound in with the pamphlet are five autograph letters addressed to Alfred Montgomery: four from Emily Temple Viscountess Palmerston and one from Henry John Temple 3rd Viscount Palmerston dated 1856 and signed "Palmerston". The Palmerston letter was written during his first term as Prime Minister 1855-1858. The Lady Palmerston letters concern social arrangements and engagements. The pamphlet itself was privately issued marked "Not for Sale" and printed shortly after Lady Palmerston's death in 1869. Hayward's sketch is one of the earliest biographical appreciations of her role within Whig political and social life. Alfred Montgomery 1814-1896 was a senior Admiralty clerk private secretary to Lord Wellesley later Commissioner of Stamps and Taxes and of the Inland Revenue and a well-known Victorian society figure. According to contemporary accounts he was a well known dandy that had 'known domestic trouble and been rewarded by non-domestic success'. He was clearly closely associated with the Palmerstons and both wrote to him personally with the letters that have been bound in. A highly unusual Palmerston association volume most likely a commemorative memento put together by Montgomery. The result being a privately printed biographical text authorial presentation inscription and contemporary autograph correspondence of both Lady Palmerston and the Prime Minister himself preserved in a presentation binding. . Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1872. Privately printed hardcover

Taylor had a brief academic career holding the professorship of English literature and language at University College London in the 1840s after which he practised law and became a civil servant. At the same time he became a journalist most prominently as a contributor to and eventually editor of Punch. In addition to these vocations Taylor began a theatre career and became best known as a playwright with up to 100 plays staged during his career. Many were adaptations of French plays but these and his original works cover a range from farce to melodrama. Most fell into neglect after his death but Our American Cousin 1858 which achieved great success in the 19th century remains famous as the piece that was being performed in the presence of US President Abraham Lincoln when he was assassinated in 1865. hardcover

The Departure - Second Class" and "The Return - First Class" are a pair of moralistic narrative works a popular genre in Victorian times and demonstrate the growing trend towards emigration particularly to Australia. The Victorian artist Abraham Solomon depicts a family traveling second class to a port where the young boy will go to sea in "The Departure". In "The Return" the boy returns as a successful middle aged squatter in the first class carriage with his son and daughter. <br /> <br /> Both paintings by Solomon are held in the National Railway Museum UK . Of "The Departure" they write "The painting is a contemporary image of rail travel showing the discomfort of the lower classes traveling in a draughty bench-seated second class carriage.
