Abraham Thornton a bricklayer "was accused of rape and murder after attending a dance where he became intimate with a gardener's daughter named Mary Ashford. They left the dance together and her body was found the next morning in a deep pool of water near a local footpath. Thornton was tried at the Warwick assizes on 8 August 1817. Since the marks on Mary's body were not necessarily inconsistent with Thornton's claim that she had consented to sexual intercourse and since the times on the morning in question when Thornton was seen walking home to Bromwich suggested he could not have been with her when she met her death the jury found him not guilty. The case aroused much interest and reminded people of a similar murder of a local woman a year earlier. Many were convinced of Thornton's guilt and he was assailed in local and London newspapers. A group collected around the Birmingham solicitor William Bedford invoked the old legal process of 'appeal of murder' by which a person acquitted of murder could be tried again for the same offense. Britton & Rose. is also known as the Moon Cactus from the moon-like appearance of the fully open flower. Thornton also says that. it was sometimes called the `Torch Thistle' as it `exhibits to the observer a figure equally grotesque as terrific with flowers possessing actually the blazing appearance of a torch.' The plant is a native of Jamaica and Cuba. This picture is one of the most arresting in the collection. The plant itself is of interest not only for its large and beautiful flowers but as a representative of those which growing in a hot and dry environment open their flowers at night for pollination by night-flying insects pollinators being scarce in such climates during the heat of the day. It is the largest flowered of an attractive genus of small plants much grown in modern times by connoisseurs. The Persian Cyclamen was not the first of its kind to become known in western Europe. Cyclamen europeaum the `Bleeding Nun' as it was called was thought to be dangerous to pregnant women: any unfortunate lady in this condition who stepped over it might immediately miscarry. John Gerrard the Elizabethan herbalist believed this implicitly and describes how he fenced his plants around with sticks with others laid across them `lest any woman should by lamentable experiment find my words to be true by stepping over the same.' When the baby was nearing full term and delivery was to be encouraged wearing of the disc-like tuber `hanged about' the expectant mothers had a salutary effect and Gerrard told his wife to use it when attending confinements. Third state of three of this plate from the Temple of Flora. `In the first state the top the castle is indistinct and has no pinnacles on the towers and this is the first feature to inspect. The hillside is pure aquatint; the shading behind the cyclamen flowers is lightly cross-hatched while the tree trunk to the right has only a few lines on it. In the second state the castle is more prominent and five distinct sharp pinnacles have been added while many extra etched lines are to be seen - notably behind the cyclamen flowers; on the tree trunk; and under the cyclamen leaves on the left which themselves stand out more sharply. The principal change in the third state is the addition of the aquatint to the sky on the left so that only a streak of light remains above the mountains while in the earlier states the light reached the top corner. The leaves of the cyclamen now have. light and dark patches the coarse-grained aquatint has been added to the middle distance. Much additional aquatinting has been applied to other parts of the plate. Zurich native Johann George Sulzer was a well-established member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences and Belle-Lettres who published widely on the appreciation of art. Sulzers influence on aesthetic theory was well known within theoretical circles in late eighteenth century Berlin. Owing to the work of Descartes particularly his Passions of the Soul 1649 Sulzers work on the origins of pleasure aimed to initiate a move toward moral psychology and ethical theory within studies of the mind. Sulzer focused on the derivation of joy and gladness in the model of a Cartesian system; simply it opposed the idea of Hedonism which believed pleasure was the sole aim of humankind. Instead Sulzers theories supported a metaphysical experience within ones own cognitive condition. Sulzers work supplements the great accomplishment of many of his near contemporary theorists who contributed to the study of emotions Descartes Hobbes Malebranche and Spinoza. His work preceded that of Kants division of the mind into pleasure or pain and who with later Kant outwardly disagreed with the weakness of the proofs promulgated by Sulzer. Abraham Gotthelf Kästner was a German poet and mathematician also a devout Lutheran. He was known in his professional life for compiling and reflecting on content for textbook study. Kästner translated and revised this Sulzers theoretical work on pleasure showcasing his encyclopedic interests but remains better known for his contributions on the history of mathematics and his various epigrams. hardcover books

Containing 17 predominantly color photographs of actors or crew members on location or interacting with the nearby community as well as clippings from local papers about the film signed letters addressed to Abraham from actors Robert Redford and Konrad Sheehan and other ephemera. <br/><br/>The film which was shot on location at the recently closed Junction City Prison in Ohio used locals as extras for the prison scenes and based on the newspaper clippings was a major source of excitement for the nearby towns. This extended to Abraham who apparently invited the stars of the film to attend an exhibition of his students' art work at Athens High School. While Redford declined local actor and apparent Redford look-alike James Linton caused quite the sensation among the teenagers. Altogether a detailed and charming look at the effects of a major Hollywood production on a community during location shooting. <br/><br/>Inspired by the 1969 nonfiction book "Accomplices to the Crime" by Tom Murton and Joe Hyams about abuse and corruption in the Arkansas prison system.
