Condition consistent with age including a repaired vertical tear extending 2- inches downward into the image area from the top right sheet edge and several tabs of non archival tape on the verso. For the etchings that are dated after 1850 the etcher used his own drawings as the source. For the ones dated in the 1830s and 1840s the etcher followed the drawings of the following artists:After drawings from the 1830s and 1840s by Pierre Toussaint Bonnaire 1813-1882; Louis Lemet 1779 - 1832; Paul Delaroche1797-1856; Horace Vernet 1789-1863; Adolphe Varin 1821-1897.Adolphe Martial Potémont aka A.-P. Martial Paris 10 February 1828 - Paris 14 October 1883 was a pupil of the painters Leon Coignet and Felix Brissot de Warville followed a general training in landscape painting but also studied historical painting and portraits. He exhibited his work at the Paris Salon in 1846 and 1882. He Is mainly known for his etchings notably his views of Paris and its inhabitants before the city was transformed by Haussmann during the 1860s. Reference: Beraldi II nos. 1 & 2. The Smithsonian Institution held an exhibition in 1976 and published a monograph entitled ' ".and there was light" - Studies by Abraham Rattner of the Stained Glass Window Chicago Loop Synagogue'.This monograph had a color cover and black and white reproductions of the window art. Rattner also produced a maquette for a more elegant work that was never published. This unique artist book measures 10 x 13 inches is bound in red cloth and is housed in a clamshell slipcase with matching cloth.The text is handwritten and there are numerous watercolors and drawings. There are 32 leaves including a watercolor tryptich measuring 13 x 28.5 inches. This archive also includes 16pp. of layout ideas and financial projection of the project.Chicago Loop Synagogue 16 S Clark St Chicago IL 60603 was built in 1957–1958. It is renowned for a stained glass artwork by Abraham Rattner. The architects were the firm Loebl Schlossman & Bennett who also designed the Richard J. Daley Center. Circa 1970s hardcover

Abraham Swan's extensive two volume study of domestic architectural designs 'A Collection of Designs' bound here with his seminal work on staircases 'The British Architect . ' .The two volume 'Collection of Designs' - the second of three pattern books published by Swan a carpenter and joiner - was his attempt to provide an inexpensive pattern book of inexpensive designs. Swan made his intentions of quantity over quality clear in his Preface: 'I hope that whatever defects may be observed in any of them will be candidly excused considering what a number of designs are contained in these two volumes and that they are all of my own contriving and drawing.' 'The first volume contains 4 engravings of the staircase at Blair Castle Perthshire which Swan designed for the Duke of Atholl 1757. Two Chinese Bridges for the grounds at Blair appear in the second volume. Swan's designs belong to the 'rococo' taste popular in the mid-18th century'. Weinreb.Swan's comprehensive work 'The British Architect' - first published 1745 here in the 3rd edition - was destined to be the first architectural book published in America. The title page of the earlier edition described the author as 'Abraham Swan Carpenter' later changed to 'Abraham Swan Architect.' The work includes the following: 'I. An easier more intelligible and expeditious Method of drawing the Five Orders than has been hitherto been published by a Scale of Twelve equal Parts free from those troublesome Divisions call'd Aliquot Parts. Designs of Arches Doors and Windows.IV. A great Variety of New and Curious Chimney-Pieces in the most elegant and modern Taste.V. Corbels Shields and other beautiful Decorations.VI.
