About The Author: William Adam 1796�1881 was a Scottish clergyman missionary and abolitionist who became deeply involved in Indian religious and educational reform. Inspired by Thomas Chalmers he studied at Bristol and Glasgow before going to India in 1818. Fluent in Sanskrit and Bengali Adam collaborated with reformer Ram Mohan Roy on translating the New Testament. However theological doubts led him to leave the Baptist mission. He co-founded the Calcutta Unitarian Society which eventually merged into the Brahmo Samaj movement. In 1830 Adam was appointed by the British colonial government to conduct a pioneering survey of native education in Bengal.
