About The Book: William Adam�s Third Report on the State of Education in Bengal 1838 presents a foundational account of indigenous education in 19th-century Bengal and Bihar. Surveying five districts Adam identified over 2500 vernacular schools offering instruction in Bengali Hindi Sanskrit Persian and Arabic commonly held in homes temples and mosques. He estimated 30915 students with a literacy rate of 5.8%. The report also emphasized home-based learning and low teacher salaries Rs. 5�8/month. As one of the earliest literacy surveys in India it provides valuable insight into traditional education systems before the widespread adoption of colonial English-medium instruction. About The Author: William Adam 1796�1881 was a Scottish clergyman missionary and abolitionist who became deeply involved in Indian religious and educational reform. Inspired by Thomas Chalmers he studied at Bristol and Glasgow before going to India in 1818. Fluent in Sanskrit and Bengali Adam collaborated with reformer Ram Mohan Roy on translating the New Testament. However theological doubts led him to leave the Baptist mission. He co-founded the Calcutta Unitarian Society which eventually merged into the Brahmo Samaj movement. In 1830 Adam was appointed by the British colonial government to conduct a pioneering survey of native education in Bengal.
