Dozens of humorous equestrian escapades are shown in color lithographs on 12 of 16 original leaves. Each leaf contains two sets of scenes for a total of 24 of 32 scenes. Lacks title page and covers if any. Ca. 9 x 13 inches. In French. In these lithographs all kinds of hapless riders and drivers in town and country come to grief in many imaginative ways. The scenes are numbered 1 through 22 and 29-30. This is item 361 in the magnificent Dejager collection Great Books on Horsemanship. The Dejager set is lacking plate 4 scenes 7 and 8 which we believe is present in our set. Very scarce; WorldCat cites a handful of locations in great libraries. Albert Adam 1832/33-1900 was well known for his illustrations of mid-19th-century French equestrian life especially the portfolio Ecole Imperiale de Cavalerie Saumur. With tinted lithographed title dedication leaf to Radetzky preface and 24 lithographed plates. With 24 ll. of explanatory text printed on blue paper. 24 ll. First edition of a monumental commemorative work to mark the campaigns of the Austrian army in Italy during the years 1848-49. The plates lithographed by Ernst and Franz Adam and printed by Julius Adam depict the street riots assaults cavalry battles and sieges near Milan Santa Lucia Vicenza Custozza Volta Mortara Novara Malghera and elsewhere during the suppression of the Italian revolt by the Habsburgs. The war correspondent Friedrich Wilhelm Hackländer 1816-77 wrote the extensive explanatory texts most in both German and French for each plate. Austria won this first Italian War of Independence; a decade later however Italy was an independent state.From the library of Duke Maximilian Joseph in Bavaria 1808-1888 father of Elisabeth Empress of Austria 'Sisi'. 1850033279<p>London: Reeve and Benham 1850 A very good copy of the 1st edition in the original decorative cloth binding with hand coloured frontispiece and 15 further hand coloured plates. This work was part of the Popular Natural History Series which was designed to introduce young people to different aspects of natural history. Adam White a Scottish zoologist authored 3 of the volumes - his particular speciality was crustacea but he had a broad knowledge of zoology. The binding is very bright and clean with gilt titles and decoration to spine and a gilt goat on the front board. There is a small red paint splash at the bottom corner of the front board and light wear to corners. Spine ends lightly pulled with a little chipping. The original endpapers are present - there is slight paper loss at the top of the front endpaper joint. Contents are complete and very clean with the occasional spot or mark. There is some spotting at the front and rear of the work - including the tissue guard to the frontispiece. The text is numbered to p346 - there is then a plate list un-numbered and an index numbered pp 1-14. Publisher's catalogue at the rear.</p> Reeve and Benham hardcover
