177717132London 1777. Copper engraving. Engraved by Roe. In excellent condition. An elegant engraving of the elaborate ceiling in the dining room of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn's celebrated house in St. James's Square London.

Robert and his brother James Adam forever changed the face of British architecture by introducing innovative Classical design ideas. From 1754-57 Robert lived in Italy where he had a long productive friendship with Piranesi which was inspirational for both men. Adam's first book on Diocletian's palace in Dalmatia is clearly very like the archaeological investigations Piranesi was making at the same time of similar ruins. Piranesi's friendship and passion for Roman Classicism were seminal influences on Adam and the greatest single factor other than his own talent in the work Adam produced on his return to England. Upon his return the brothers launched their career by building the Adelphi from the Thames to the Strand in London which although not a commercial success at the time included one of London's most cherished buildings the Adlephi Theatre. Together the Adam brothers designed and built some of the most famous buildings in England including such bastions of English architecture as Kenwood House Keddlestone Manor and Syon House. To the interiors of their English country houses the Adams brought wonderful ornamental elements in niches lunettes festoons and reliefs. Their classically designed buildings were so numerous in London that they changed the prevailing feel of the city and established their brand of neo-Classicism as the model of elegance and importance. It is asserted that the brothers originated the concept of the uniform facade attached to the typical English row house an architectural device that distinguishes London buildings. This monumental contribution is evidenced in the Adams' designs for Portland Place and Fitzroy Square and these were used as architectural models for the whole city. The brothers brought their talents into other areas by designing furniture to complement their beautiful interiors and by creating and publishing a treatise of design entitled 'Works in Architecture'. The work was published in three volumes over an extended span of time beginning in 1773 with the final volume being published posthumously in 1822.

Cf. Brunet I.47; cf. An autograph letter unsigned in the handwriting of Adam Badeau. It is addressed to General William Sherman’s son Father Thomas Sherman four days after the legendary general’s death. Badeau wrote “I hardly dare intrude on you at this sacred moment…I am willing to offer my sympathy to you are your dear brother and sisters. Now while the whole country mourns I will not admit that after those who were closest in blood there is no who loved or admired your great father more…than I. Surely no one had more peculiar opportunities to know the wisdom and the genius of your great father to test his full and loyal nature. My life…should for twenty years made me contemplate his career and the constant assistance he gave me by…the informal knowledge I had…in him the solder was truly the development of the man…know not only the soldier by the man. He came towards Genl Grant…so magnanimous and so difficult…unsurpassed for freedom from moral defect. In all my…peculiar knowledge of his character and career I never found a manner a shadow of a vice…My heart has spoken in spite of me. I only want to say to all the sons and daughters of Genl Sherman that after themselves and the others closest in blood no one in the nation has better cause to mourn because no one has more cause to love and admire his memory. Your father and mother were both my friends and you will let me tell you all that…â€. There are some additional words in another’s handwriting. There are a few crossouts and two faint folds that affect little. unknown books

1622222961622. 143 x 97 mm. wide margins.

Slightly worn; edges browned. In very good condition overall. Possibly after the same painting on which the woodcut portrait in his Compendium Musicae of 1632 is based.

Gumpelzhaimer spent most of his active life in Augsburg where he was Kantor and Präzeptor at the school and church of St. Anna from 1581 until his death. "Gumpelzhaimer was probably best known to German musicians of and after his time through his Compendium musicae. The richness of musical activity of St Anna is indicated not only by Gumpelzhaimer's music but also by the extensive holdings of the church library during his 44 years there. A handwritten inventory was started by Gumpelzhaimer in 1620 and continued by Faust in 1625. This list includes in addition to many printed collections several large manuscript books of polyphonic music in score notation. Two of these books have survived one begun in 1599 and the other completed in 1624. They were copied out mostly by Gumpelzhaimer and contain compositions by many prominent musicians of the time."
