1938355490716997London: Geoffrey Bles 1938. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. First UK Edition. The book itself is the correct Geoffrey Bles first issue with red cloth boards with white lettering and publisher's device on the spine and the title in white on the front cover. A near fine copy. In the VERY RARE D/W priced 7/6 net to the inside flap as called for. The D/W is a lovely example in the photographic style its only minor fault being the number 13 written in biro at the top left hand corner of the back panel. Quoting from the Spectator review of the time: "The fact that a Professor begins lecturing 'to the accompaniment of a hundred pens and pencils scratching over the surface of as many note-books' suggests to me that Adam Broome hails from Girton. Be that as it may two West African students are shot and an extraordinary pseudo-Gothic or Late-Temperance-Tract style of verbal architecture is maintained throughout. For anyone who wants a novel view of . East Anglia this book is a snip". Rare. Geoffrey Bles hardcover

Kulmus practiced at Danzig and his Tabulae anatomicae were very popular and have been repeatedly reprinted and translated. The "Anatomische Tabellen" were even translated into Japanese after a Japanese physician named MAYENO had satisfied himself by a dissection of a Japanese woman Aocha-Baba that they presented the true anatomical relations and thus demonstrated that such anatomy as had been taught in Japan up to that time was absolutely false. cf. First editions thus of these catalogues and exceedingly rare complete salesman sample kit for the Wagner Manufacturing garage door hardware in the 1920s. After World War I the explosion and popularity of automobile ownership in the United States created a desperate need to house these often cantankerous and essential machines for homes businesses and commercial fleets. By quickly adapting their hardware sets for elevator doors first introduced before World War I Wagner was able to quickly capitalize on the market growth and need for door hardware to retrofit existing garages as well as new construction. Often coupled with doors produced by Johnson Fimbel Hartford Barber-Colman Overhead and Crawford the Wagner hardware sets proved durable and popular. In addition this sample kit features the specialized steel stud brackets developed by Wagner to help brace garages and sheds adapted for garage doors to hold automobiles as the weight of the doors could damage existing construction as Americans were interested in rolling doors and sectional garage doors rather than traditional swing-out barn-type doors. Wagner 1871-1937 originally founded his company in Cedar Falls IA in 1904 to manufacture children’s sleds coaster wagons and hay rack fixtures with a variety of door hardware. They merge with Star Elevator Doors before World War I and later with Boardman Elevator Control of Chicago with primary customers as Otis Elevator and Westinghouse. In 1934 Wagner began producing the iconic Wagner Overhead Garage Door and by the 1950s had become one of the largest garage door manufacturers in the country. 168516903Paris: distribuë par l'Auteur en l'Hostel des Manufactures des Gobelins et en la rue St.Jacques 1685. Copper engraving on two joined sheets after Van der Meulen. Titled in French and Latin. In excellent condition. Some infill work along the bottom margin. Image size: 18 1/2 x 38 5/8 inches. A striking contemporary view of Gray in Franche-Comte by the celebrated court painter Van der Meulen.

This fine view shows the town of Gray in Franche-Comte built on the banks of the Saône River. One of the most important trading towns in Franche-Comte the region became a possession of the Spanish Hapsburgs in 1556. Although some of the region's fortified towns were occupied by France during the Wars of Religion peace and prosperity continued until the advent of the Thirty Years War when the region was ravaged by both Catholics and Protestants. Louis XIV conquered Franche-Comté in 1668 and again in 1674 and finally obtained its cession from Spain. Van der Meulen's striking image depicts the king and his armies entering the town after they successfully re-conquered the region. Adam Frans Van der Meulen was a landscape and genre painter who specialized in battle scenes and his early works i.e. those from the years before he left for Paris the earliest dated work is from 1653 are mainly cavalry skirmishes in the manner of his teacher Pieter Snayer. After he moved to Paris the character of his work changed and became more ceremonial. He now specialized in large topographical views and military scenes and in royal journeys processions and receptions. His most important task was to accompany the king on his many campaigns during the wars of conquest waged in the 1660s and 1670s against inter alia the Spanish Netherlands and as Peintre de conquêtes du roi officially to portray the memorable sieges battles and conquests of le Roi Soleil in large-scale canvases or cartoons which were later transformed into tapestries. Van der Meulen was born in Brussels where he was baptized in 1632. In 1646 he was apprenticed to the battle painter Pieter Snayers. In 1651 he became a master in the Guild of St. Luke in Brussels but by 1663 he had moved to Paris where he joined a group of Netherlandish artists associated with the French painter Charles Le Brun 1619-90 who not only was Premier peintre du roi but also from 1663 director of the Parisian tapestry manufactory Manufacture royale des Gobelins. Van der Meulen quickly became a protégé of Le Brun and on his recommendation Van der Meulen was appointed court painter to Louis XIV on 1 April 1664 and at the same time became Le Brun's collaborator in the tapestry manufactory. In 1673 he was accepted as a member of the Académie royale de Peinture et de Sculpture without any obligation to submit a morceau de réception; in 1681 he became conseiller and in 1686 premier conseiller. He died as a highly esteemed artist in the Hôtel des Gobelins 15 October 1690. distribuë par l'Auteur, en l'Hostel des Manufactures des Gobelins, et en la rue St.Jacques unknown
147731London: Printed for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell In the Strand 1979. Bicentenary edition of Adam Smith's magnum opus and cornerstone of economic thought. Quarto 2 volumes bound in full brown morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised bands marbled endpapers. One of one thousand copies this is number 492. In fine condition. Housed in a custom cloth slipcase. Accompanied by a small booklet printed in Japanese by W.B. Todd and K.E. Carpenter titled 'Bibliographical Story of The Wealth of Nations' laid in and the original numbered shipping box. An exceptional example of this landmark work. First published in 1776 Adam Smith's masterpiece The Wealth of Nations is the foundation of modern economic thought and remains the single most important account of the rise of and the principles behind modern capitalism. It took Smith ten years to produce An Inquiry into the Wealth of Nations. His commentary during such an incremental time the first years of the Industrial Revolution sought to reform outdated theories of mercantilist and physiocratic economic thought with broader concepts that we are all familiar with today such as the division of labor productivity and free markets. An important theme that persists throughout the work is the idea that the economic system is automatic and when left with substantial freedom able to regulate itself. This is often referred to as the “invisible hand.†The ability to self-regulate and to ensure maximum efficiency however is limited by a number of external forces and “privileges†extended to certain members of the economy at the expense of others. The 1776 publication of An Inquiry into The Wealth of Nations was the first of only five editions that were published in Adam Smith’s lifetime and greatly influenced a number of economists and philosophers of his time and those that followed including Jean-Baptiste Say Alexander Hamilton Thomas Malthus and Ludwig von Mises. "The history of economic theory up to the end of the nineteenth century consists of two parts: the mercantilist phase which was based not so much on a doctrine as on a system of practice which grew out of social conditions; and the second phase which saw the development of the theory that the individual had the right to be unimpeded in the exercise of economic activity. While it cannot be said that Smith invented the latter theory.his work is the first major expression of it. He begins with the thought that labour is the source from which a nation derives what is necessary to it. The improvement of the division of labour is the measure of productivity and in it lies the human propensity to barter and exchange.Labour represents the three essential elements-wages profit and rent-and these three also constitute income. From the working of the economy Smith passes to its matter -'stock'- which encompasses all that man owns either for his own consumption or for the return which it brings him. The Wealth of Nations ends with a history of economic development a definitive onslaught on the mercantile system and some prophetic speculations on the limits of economic control. The Wealth of Nations is not a system but as a provisional analysis it is complete convincing. The certainty of its criticism and its grasp of human nature have made it the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" PMM. Printed for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell, In the Strand hardcover
