180760047New Haven: Brisban & Brannan 1807. First edition 12mo pp. 250 original full calf gilt-paneled spine; light dampstaining to the upper gutter; all else very good and sound. Of this small grammar Webster wrote in an 1805 letter to the American publisher Mathew Carey: "I am compiling a Grammar upon what appear to be the true idioms & fundamental principles of the Language--which I hope to have ready for the press within a year." Webster's goal was to lay out the principles of American English based on its own structure thereby discarding previous grammatical systems which served British English. In it he has developed "the real structure and idiom of our language. I have left Lowth and Johnson and mounted to the original writers as far back as the first Saxon laws and annals. The result is that many of the principles of grammar as taught in Lowth formerly and now in Murray whose book is nothing but Lowth's altered and enlarged prove to be totally false; and I affirm that those grammars now taught introduce more errors than they correct" letter from Webster to Joel Barlow Nov. 12 1807. Although this title was not as successful as his series of spellers and readers Webster considered it one of his two most important works. Twenty years later in a letter to Lemuel Shattuck Nov. 18 1829 Webster writes: "My Philosophical and Practical Grammar was first published in 1807 and a second edition in 1822. This work has been but little used; but except for my quarto dictionary I consider it as altogether the most valuable work I have ever published." Skeel 433; Sabin 102375; American Imprints 14192. The following year in 1807 Webster began two consecutive decades of intensive work to expand his publication into a fully comprehensive dictionary An American Dictionary of the English Language. To help trace the etymology of words Webster learned 26 languages. Webster hoped to standardize American speech since Americans in different parts of the United States used somewhat different vocabularies and spelled pronounced and used words differently.

In 1825 while spending a year abroad at the University of Cambridge and then in Paris Webster completed this dictionary which featured 70000 words about 12000 of which had never before appeared in a dictionary. A spelling reformer Webster believed that English spelling rules were unnecessarily complex and used the dictionary to introduce American English spellings replacing colour with color waggon with wagon and centre with center. He also added American words including skunk and squash that did not appear in British dictionaries. Three years later at age of 70 in 1828 Webster published the dictionary. In 1843 following Webster's death George Merriam and Charles Merriam secured publishing and revision rights to Webster's 1840 dictionary.
. George and Charles Merriam unknown

1796000618NEW YORK. Fair with no dust jacket. 1796. Non-Book. On offer is a post-revolutionary 1796 operational ledger sheet of the prominent Dutchess County Amenia New York family of Captain Noah Wheeler. The ledger sheet details exactly how a post-Revolutionary farm family managed their wheat their assets debts and the passing of the torch from a veteran father to his adolescent sons. This ledger sheet was kept by Captain Noah Wheeler 1743-1823 and two of his sons. Capt. Wheeler was a descendant of the prominent Wheeler family of New York State. He was a member of the 6th Regiment Charlotte Precinct Dutchess County Militia. Detailed BIO NOTES can be found at the end of this listing. In 1796 Capt. Wheeler then in his early 50s was working in wheat production alongside his 15- and 18-year-old sons Thomas Newcomb 1773-1844 and Anthony 1771-1840. In autumn of that year they were producing wheat and kept this balance sheet to track details of their sowing and production external sales internal consumption financial balances and debts. The sheet also includes details such as who purchased the wheat what is owed to each of the three Wheelers or how much they owed. On the verso is written Account of Wheat in 1796 of Noah Wheeler Anthony & Thomas N his sons. The title is written in the same hand as that of the balance sheet itself. This document provides surprisingly deep insight into the daily lives of the patriarch and young men of a rural pioneering American family and gives a glimpse into the work a father did to prepare his sons to take over the family business as they became men. Condition: Large ledger sheet measuring approximately 13.5x7.75. It has been folded and there is age toning some light stains and splitting along fold lines consistent with its age and use. It is entirely legible and written in ink. Overall Fair. BIO NOTES: Noah Wheeler was born in Connecticut to Captain Thomas Wheeler 1715-1754 and Eunice Gates 1718-1787. Thomas Wheeler fought in the French and Indian War and died in Fite Miller tavern on his way home on September 1 1757. Noah Wheeler fought in the Revolutionary War under Colonel David Southerland. He was a member of the 6th Regiment Charlotte Precinct Dutchess County Militia. He was noted as being ranked First Lt. On March 30 1778 and made Captain June 25 1778. Noah Wheeler married Eunice Newcombe 1748-1812 also of Dutchess County. Together they had at least 12 children. His sons including Anthony and Thomas Newcomb were all farmers who built strong estates in New York State.
