A contemporary of Noah Webster Joseph Emerson Worcester was a lexicographer who also worked on Webster's Dictionary but published several dictionaries and other reference works as well. He and Webster engaged in what are now known as The Dictionary Wars in which Webster slung accusations of plagiarism while Worcester maintained that his work was his own.
