Contains the reporting of the variations of the magnetic needle as observed at different periods within the borders of Maine with the Commissioner's Report presented to then Governor Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain of the 20th Maine Civil War fame who then submitted it to the Senate and House of Representatives of Maine. 83 pages. Gilt lettered binding has light edge wear and some rub marks flyleaf is fragile at the hinge; backside of the flyleaf is an advertisement for Surveyor's Vernier Compass which is taped on the bottom half of the spine edge; there is also another full page advertisement within the text for Engineers' Transit also from the W. & L. Ad for "The Chorister's Guide" published by West & Richardson on the rear cover. Untrimmed pages. Inscribed by Noah Worcester to John Comly and dated 1818 on the first page. St. John's Newfoundland had two fires in 1817 which were jointly named as the Great Fire of 1817. This pamphlet outlines some of the aid sent from Boston. St. John's was to experience more fires in 1819 and later in the century in 1849 and 1892. The inscribee John Comly 1773-1850 was a Quaker minister and school master.
