The volume is divided into eight sections numbered 14 to 21 and continues the historical geographical agricultural and political discussions begun in volume I first published in 1802. The second edition of vol. II adds the text of Washington's Farewell Address. Josiah Meigs president of the University of Georgia praised both volumes in 1804 in a letter to his friend Webster: "I am much pleased with your manner of describing our North America. You have risen from the briars and brambles of detail and given us a luminous and comprehensive view of a WHOLE. I shall use my influence to introduce it into our schools. ."
