193912900New York: Combo Press 1939. First Edition. First edition limited to 1000 copies this copy out-of-series. Octavo 22.5 cm; pebbled cloth boards; dustjacket; 256pp; illus. Previous owner's bookplate inside front cover else a clean tight copy in the scarce illustrated dustwrapper generally worn and soiled with brief losses at extremities Good to Very Good. Novel of Depression-era Jewish ghetto life in Chicago by the Yiddish poet Noah Steinberg b. 1889. A member in the teens and twenties of the "Die Junge" school of Yiddish poets and playwrights who consciously avoided the social themes of their "Sweatshop Poet" forebears Steinberg appears by the late thirties to have embraced a more proletarian world view; the current work deals frankly with poverty crime anti-Semitism and "the degeneration of the governing class by power largely misused" from the jacket copy.

The book was composed in English though nearly all Steinberg's earlier published work was written in Yiddish. Text Illustrations rather crudely reproduced by S. Witkewitz Louis Lodowick Rinaldo Cuneo Hilda Katz George Grosz others. Uncommon in dustjacket this is a fairly well-preserved copy. Jacket includes a lengthy cover blurb by Tom Cannon composed as a letter to Upton Sinclair and Jim Tully; also brief comments by Sherwood Anderson and Llewellyln Jones. Combo Press unknown
