"While in Devonshire he planned and probably began his ÔMeditations among the Tombs.Õ An excursion to Kilkhampton from Bideford is said to have been the occasion of his laying the scene of the ÔMeditationsÕ among the tombs of that place.Hervey's writings were for a long time exceedingly popular. His first work was entitled ÔMeditations and Contemplations.Õ The first volume containing ÔMeditations among the TombsÕ ÔReflections on a Flower GardenÕ and ÔA Descant upon CreationÕ was published in February 1745-6 and the second containing ÔContemplations on the NightÕ ÔContemplations on the Starry HeavensÕ and a ÔWinter PieceÕ appeared in 1747. These volumes are filled with truisms expressed in the most inflated language but were admired by educated persons and even superseded to a great extent such a powerful work as Law's ÔSerious Call.Õ The explanation may in part be found in Hervey's sympathy with the principles of the evangelical revival and partly in a true appreciation of the beauties of nature very rare in his time. The work is a letter whereby an English clergyman is writing to his London friend on his views of Alciphron or The Minute Philosopher. This is the second edition of this text. The Minute Philosopher is a philosophical dialogue by Irish philosopher George Berkeley. In this work he combats the arguments of the free-thinkers such as Mandeville and Shaftesbury against the Christian religion. The work was first published in 1732 the same year that this review was published. Although there is not an author attributed to the title page it was later known that the title was written by John Hervey or 2nd Baron Hervey of Ickworth. John Hervey was an English courtier political writer and memoirist. He was known for writing very brutally frank works such as his memoirs of the court of George II where he gave a very unflattering account of the King and Frederick Prince of Wales. In a full cloth binding. Externally smart with some bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Prior owner's inscription to front pastedown A G Mollard Aberdeen June 1971. A pamphlet attacking William Pultney and Henry St John Viscount Bolingbroke cofounders of the weekly Craftsman a newspaper circulating from 1726 to 1752. It was issued to eight London editions and one Dublin edition. Written by Baron John Hervey an English courtier and political writer who was involved in many literary quarrels. Bound in contemporary paper covered boards. Externally very smart with light shelf wear to the extremities and the odd mark to the board. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the odd spot and age toning to the endpapers. Very Good Indeed J. Peele paperback

Appears to be complete apart from verse IV of <em>Elegy</em> p. 72 which has been cut out. Marbling rubbed edge-wear includes corners worn to board closed page edges tanned some foxing of text. <strong>Inscription reads: </strong><em>'I have reason to think that Burns our Poet read this book while in the Library at Dumfries - see p. 130 where are passages imitated in his Epistle to Capt.
