Neat ink inscription to front endpaper: "J. B. Priestley Esq. with the cordial regards of Henry Allen". Clean throughout. A very good book with an interesting provenance. "William Hervey Allen Jr. December 8 1889 � December 28 1949 was an American poet biographer and novelist. His poetry heralded the birth of the "lost generation" of the 1920s. Allen was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. He graduated from Shady Side Academy in 1909 and from the University of Pittsburgh in 1915 where he also became a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He served as a Lieutenant in the 28th keystone Division United States Army during World War I and fought in the Aisne-Marne offensive July�August 1918. He wrote Toward the Flame 1926 a nonfictional account of his experiences in the war. His first book Wampum and Old Gold was awarded the Yale Younger Poets Prize. Allen is best known for his work Anthony Adverse. He also planned a series of novels about colonial America called The Disinherited. He completed three works in the series: The Forest and the Fort 1943 Bedford Village 1944 and Toward the Morning 1948. The novels tell the story of Salathiel Albine a frontiersman kidnapped as a boy by Shawnee Indians in the 1750s. All three works were collected and published as the City in the Dawn. Allen also wrote Israfel 1926 a biography of American writer Edgar Allan Poe. For a period of time Allen taught at the Porter Military Academy in Charleston South Carolina. He also taught English at Charleston High School which at that time although public was only for boys. The girls went to Memminger. There he met and befriended DuBose Heyward. He later was a professor at Vassar University where he met his wife Ann "Annette" Andrews. They had three children Marcia Mary Ann and Richard. In the 1940s he co-edited the Rivers of America Series with Carl Carmer. Allen was a good friend of Marjory Stoneman Douglas and instigated her writing The Everglades: River of Grass. Allen was close friends with Robert Frost and Ogden Nash.Allen died at his home called the Glades in Coconut Grove Florida aged 60 from a heart attack and was found by his wife Annette." - See Wikipedia. Collated complete.Hervey had a lasting impact on art through William Blake who was an admirer of his and influenced Blake's poem 'The Tyger'.Extensive 1873 inscription of Thomas Croulle to a front blank with the morocco label 'Mary Hudson 1814' to front board.Published in the civil parish of Burslem Stoke on Trent in the early 19th century by Tregortha a major figure in the book trade of the region and provided printing and binding services. He printed about eighty-one books and pamphlets many of a religious nature between 1796 and his death in 1821. In a full calf binding with contemporary owner's morocco label to front board. Minor loss to back strip tail with light rubbing to back strip and joints. Joint tails starting with boards firmly held. Inscription to a front blank. Internally firmly bound. An early but broken run of this little poetry anthology 15 volumes in total 11 in the publishers colored card wrappers and 4 volumes hard cover with printed dust jackets spanning 1932 to 1954. The early editions are edited by Charles Marris and published by Harry Tombs the later are edited by Louis Johnson and published by A.H. & A.W. Reed.<br /> <br /> Many of these issues were the property of J.R. Hervey New Zealand poet and Anglican minister. His signature appears on several front wrappers sometimes with his notation of his poems published within. Two copies of 1941 one stamped "Review copy". Most with the bookseller's label for Newbold's Bookshop Dunedin. Some issues are stamped "J. Dennis Hervey". The later hard covers were not Hervey's copies. <br /> <br /> A nice clutch of these magazines from the first anthology issued including authors such as Robin Hyde J.C. Anderson Eileen Duggan J.R. Hervey and Dora Hagemeyer. The early wrapper copies are in very good condition perhaps with the edges a little bent and rusted staples but very good overall.
