Além da obra de Hervey inclui a célebre <em>Elegia num cemitério de aldeia</em> de Thomas Gray um dos poetas por ele influenciados nas páginas 187 a 195. The first edition was published in two volumes in 1787.</p>_x000d_<p>The preliminary pages contain a quote from Cicero and the value attributed to the book. The first 70 pages include a biography of the author. The main work takes up pages 71 to 159 followed by various letters from the author and a meditation by an anonymous author until page 187. In addition to Hervey"s work it includes the famous <em>Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard</em> of Thomas Gray one of the poets influenced by him on pages 187 to 195. Finally the other parts of Hervey"s work follow: <em>Reflections on a Flower Garden</em>; <em>Contemplations on the Starry Heavens</em> and <em>The Funeral of Arabert Monk of La Trappe</em> a poem by Edward Jerningham.</p>_x000d_<p>James Hervey Hardingstone Northampton 1714 - 1758. English churchman and philosopher. He was a clergyman of the Anglican Church ordained in 1737 but developed a strong adherence to Calvinism. He was rector of Weston Favell and Collingtree. Forest green linen over boards title printed in white onto upper board and spine top edge stained green 4to 11-1/4 inches tall pp. unpaginated 89 with 90 being a blank illustrated with ten tissue-guarded color plates and each flower in turn followed by it's own accompanying text. Volume with an occasional spot of finger soil to text light offset to eps from DJ flaps and to pre-title from a once inserted card some show through to plate versos old price in pencil to ffep a stray pin head sized bit of green top edge stain to fore-edge and one tissue guard noted with two tiny holes. Unclipped DJ is toned with minor chips and small closed tears. Box is well worn but complete with stains a single corner split to upper half and a pencil note to outside lower half "Gift from Aunt Emma" also loosely inserted is a small piece of paper with " from Aunt Emma" written in pencil. We cannot identify the recipient other than to speculate that he might have been a relative of another New York-dwelling Jerome Salinger better known as J.D.
